Re: [buzz] jumping koi [In reply to] Can't Post

i've had koi jump due to water problems (high ph levels will make them do desperate things).
I've also had one jump out of a tub going for a bug too agressively and land on the ground. They jump if being pursued by a predator (snakes go for koi too) and sometimes being chased by each other. Several jumped out of the pond to avoid being netted when I was culling fry.
The first thing to do is check your water. Ph, Ammonia, NO2, NO3, and then inspect them for possible parasite infestation (probably around the gills).
Sudden weather changes (sudden thunderstorms) can sometimes cause ph to crash or oxygen levels to drop as well.

I agree with larzl, if your water quality is not good and you have rain coming down koi will jump.

I have a matsuba that is just a jumper she likes to jump. I fear that one day she will jump out of my pond and I wont find her in time. I dont know why some koi like to jump but they do and this can be trouble for them if you have small ponds.

I will say this be very carefull and watch your pond after and durning a rain, koi will and do jump.

Check your water. PH, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia etc. but if you really don't have those test kits, like i don't either, a quick water change of 20% and an additon of rock salt (no Iodized, it'll kill fish) will do the trick. how much salt depends on how much water.

I give mine 3.5 to 5 kilos per 1000 litres. don't worry so much on the calculations bec these koi can stand much more than that dose. just think of it as being brackish for them. Smile

I'd be careful about salting a pond without checking ph first. Salt raises ph and if high ph is the problem already it could do more harm than goodShocked. Especially if there is ammonia present as it is more toxic at higher ph levels.

Hi Larry,

I totally agree. Adding 0.5% salt is a bit risky. I might start killing good bacteria. I normally use 0.3% salt unless its QT with no filters. Check your ammonia first before adding saltSmile

hi guys, all what you said are true.Smile i agree. but it seems to me that the reason that buzz's fish are jumping is bec of poor bio filtration and high ammonia levels, that's why i recommended a 20% water change. salt is, as we all know, a "cure all" for all the different diseases and minor parasite infestations our koi suffer from, which is profusely magnified with poor water parameters. But of course as we gradually develop our taste for the hobby, we learn certain things like checking water quality, knowing what type of food to give, what pattern is acceptible as a juvenile fish for it to grow into a good looking adult, the diff filtration stages, what are the diff dimensions of a vortex for it to be an effective mechanical filter, etc etc etc. I gather by his typing "jumping Koi" on google, he's NOT YETWink a Koi Die hard like most in the forum.

And that's where i came to a conclusion that a 20% water change plus salt will most probably solve his problem.

and in my 8 years of Koi keeping, and around 20 years of fishkeeping in general, i have never killed a fish by way of "SALT"Wink

LOL

Hi Betsy,

I again totally agree with you(this timeWink) regarding water parameters, filters and using salt, but not all pond are the same, IMHO. We are all talking from our expiriences and sharing them in this forum which is great like yourself with 20yrs experience of fish keeping, WOW congratulations. I do have one koi who likes to jump just for funCrazy. I'm just hoping the koi won't jump the wrong wayFrown

Congratulations on your excellent track record. I think we all share the same diagnosis of the probable cause and likely cure, but I'm always a bit cautious when symptoms are all there is to go by. Without knowing ph and ammonia levels I would hate to advise someone in a way that may cause harm. The more posts I read from new koi keepers (some of whom have killed several koi by salting ponds with already high ph levels) the more I realize that many don't know about the toxic relationship between high ph and ammonia, so I encourage testing before salting just to be on the safe side. A veteran like yourself has the luxury of experience to visually diagnose a problem that a novice lacks.
Water changes to dilute the problem on the other hand are always a safe betWink.

yeah you guys are actually right, all ponds are unique and ph levels in diff areas vary. i just am lucky i guess that the village i live in the phils always is at high 6's or low 7's which is the reason i rarely check ph. The last time i checked was 5 years ago when pond was first constructed. the concrete was new so ph was a mess. I guess i'll check again when i get a new kit soon.Unimpressed

nice exchanging ideas with you guys

If doing what everyone else suggests doesn't work, you could always cover your pond with a leaf net. It's not very attractive, but if all else fails it could save some koi.
