mechanical filter has mold Can't Post

I suspect my mechanical filter has mold growing on it. It doesn't look like the regular brownish bio-film. It actually looks like pinkish brown spores. I tell you 'spores' b/c it looks like random round patches of bacteria growing on. I'm sure its mold spores.
There's no light because the drum is covered. Could this be part of the problem because the drum is covered, that moisture can't escape, therefore condensation humidity and some unknown bacteria, and BAM!!!, you have a mold colony growing.

I'm sure that mold can't be good for the water quality.

How do I solve this problem? Do I remove all the media, dry it out completely, then boil it? Or bleach it? dry it out, and then boil off the residue?
I haven't seen the bottom of the next sequential chamber to know if its spread or not. I suppose the water system has spread the bacteria around, but I haven't seen any other colonies except in the mechanical filter media.

People that have had this problem, please give me some solid advice.

Mold spores are tiny.
Meaning, so tiny you cannot see 100, 500 or 1000 on your finger tip.

You may have some kind of mold growing there.
But, I doubt it will do any harm.

Mold spores are everywhere.
With the right temp range & some moisture. They grow.

But, in an open environment, they are seldom hostile, or toxic.
To whatever else is in the same environment.

An, open environments, such an open air pond.
Will have it's own checks & balances.
Unless it becomes pandemic, I would not worry.

A few years back, I had a bit of clear jelly like blob, sort of jellyfish.
Grow in bio-filter.

It lasted a few weeks, then disappeared.
Who knows what it was, or where it went. I don’t.
Nor care, as long as it did no harm.
