Hi,

What do you mean flesh eating bacteria? Some pictures (clear shots please) will help in identifying the problem. Anyway, what are you doing with 100 fries? Are you a dealer or breeder?

If you are unable to obtain pictures, take a quick trip to www.koivet.com to obtain information on what is affecting your koi.

In the meantime please elaborate on your pond's construction, filtration and water quality measurements.

Sometimes one or a number of elements in the pond can be a factor in causing disease to your koi.

Sounds like:
*Herpes, or
*Saprolegenia (spelling ?)(also known as cotton wool fungus).

How many kois are affected by it?

You may have to consider treatment or quarantine before introducing even more koi.

Hopefully your filtration can keep up with the addition of another 100 koi.

they were doin really good. theyve been in there for about a month and they were doin good until 3 days ago. ive taken out 4 of them that i saw were sick. but the rest seem to be doin well. i have a filter that filters for a 3000 gal pond and another for 2000 gals. so i think it should be enough.

Re: [dirrtybirdy] my kois are sick [In reply to] Can't Post

ok first stop feeding your fish next you need to get a large kiddy paddling pool about 3000 litres fill it with 60% pond water 40 % tap water add an external filer and get some declorinator then empty your pond. Take out all the gravel and rocks in the pond. Get a water meter to attach the the hose pipe and fill the pond make a note of how many gallons the pond actually holds.

Do not feed the fish.

When the pond is full leave it for 6 days with your pumps running. As you do not mention the type of filters you have i will assume that they are pre filters that are attached to the pumps instead of external filters that you should invest in.

The next bit of basic kit you should also invest in is a water peramitor test kit that can tell you about the amount of ammonia nitrites nitrates PH GH and KH In your water.

Do not feed your fish.

In the meen time while your pond is being emptyed and refilled (do not use rule of thump to measure the amount of water get a meter) you need to treat the kiddy pool with malchite green on a 14 day program, (as you should know the volume of the kiddys pool being 3000 litres) If not use the meter.

Do not feed your fish.

On the first day of treatment with malachite green use the recomended dosage for the amount of water 3 days after retreat the water with half the origional dosage, on day 7 treat again with half the origional dosage and again on day 11 with hald the origional dosage. After day 14 the the malachite green should have dissipated itself.

Do not be tempted to use malachite green and formalin mix or formaldihyde and malachite green combinations AKA, FMG.

Do not feed your fish.

Before adding your fish to the pond check the water peramitors then add the fish to the pond over a period of time say about 10 to 15 fish per week, before adding the next group of 10 or 15 check the water peramitors water temp ect.

Do not feed your fish.

When adding your fish to the pond be gentle bag them carefully and float the bag for 15 to 30 minutes to equalize water temp before releasing them back into the pond.

Do not feed your fish.

Once you have 30 fish in the pond you can start to feed them again but do so sparingly and keep using the test kits to check water peramitors every 4 days. When you check the water also take out and clean your mechanical bits of your filter, wash them in pond water that you should be also changing about every 4 days. Change pond water every 4 days about 6%. Once you have the fish back in the pond and are feeding them sparingly you could leave the water changes for 7 days but do 10 to 15 %.

I hope you take Zoul's advice to heart. Rocks and Gravel in the pond provide you with 4 things. Places for Koi to wound themselvesFrown, places for for the wrong kind of anaerobic bacteria to grow and produce hydrogen sulfide gasTongue, a home for parasites to hide and breedShocked, and a place for all kinds of fish crap to accumulate where your filters can't get to itPirate.
I don't know how long your pond has been up and running, but throwing a few hundred babies in a rocky pond with an immature filter is an invitation for disaster. You'll either have to clean it up now or hold a few hundred Koi Funerals and clean it up later. Now is better.
BTW. Don't feed themWink

Ok. Time to review what has already been asked, but not yet answered.
What type of filtration do you have and can it be moved (temporarily) to the Kiddie pool Zoul talked about?
What are your water parameters? Ph, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, Kh, Gh in real numbers. (good is not a number, it is an opinion) If you don't have a test kit for the water you need to get one yesterday. Last month would be betterWink.
Your plants are portable so moving them to the kiddie pool when the time comes won't be a problem. You'll need to skim off the blanketweed with a net, move the hyacinth and lettuce to the pool, then the potted plants. All this can be done while you are pumping water from the pond to the pool. Get some polyfill quilt batting to filter the water into the pool with. It will catch any mulm and algae which will keep the pool clean. (be sure to wash the pool down and let it sun dry to clean any chem residue if it is new)
Getting these things ready to go and the answers to the questions will help you get ready for what needs to happen next.
