plants in new koi pond Can't Post

I am using a cloverleaf genesis 4 bay filter with vortex, brushes, bio media, and stone bacterial media. The pond is 1.5mt all over and is approx 10000 ltrs. I don't really want plants in the pond so constructed it with sheer sides with no ledges. However people are scaring me with talk about too high nitrate levels because of the lack of plant life. What should I do ?
Thanks

What are you readings.....ammonia , nitrIte and nitrAte???

A trickle tower or bakki shower will help reduce the nitrAte, but below 30ppm can be considered safe, IMHO. As long as regular maintenance are done meaning flashing the filter systemSmile

If you do plan on putting five 35cm koi straight in, I would watch the water paramaters carefully as the introduction of so many large koi will cause a spike in ammonia and nitrite readings for a several weeks until the biofilter matures to consume and convert the wastes of the koi.

Most likely you'll be encountering a new pond syndrome and you might experience cloudy water as the good bacterial population starts to climb.

Feed very little during this stage if possible.

You might consider a 2-3 times a week 10% water change to keep nitrite and ammonia levels low.

Thanks sounds like a good idea. My local Koi centre recomended rhizofiltration - planting a wet are near the pond a taking a water feed from it back to the pond. There is no way that I could manage a unit with any more than about 25 gallons without ripping out my new pond. Is this type of vegatable filter a good idea?
I am using a cloverleaf genesis 4 bay filter, oase uvc, and pwermax 1200 pump. I could take the bypass feed from the uvc (which is before the genesis) and feed it into a vegetable type affair and let it trickle back to the pond - god idea or not ?
Thank you

This presents a visual explanation to how the trickle tower (TT) worked. The TT is much more efficient than any vegetable filter out there on the market, although it isn't visually appealing at most times, it is far more effective at combating high nitrite and ammonia levels along with green water than most submerged biofilter and UVC combos:
