string algae Can't Post

Hi there, I read this forum all the time but usually don't post anything. Lots of good info. My question is in regards to string algae, I have been toilet brushing and scrubbing everyday, I have a 3000 gallon pond with 4 barley pals in the waterfall, but we are coming upon winter soon, will the string algae continue to grow thur the winter or will the harsh New England winter slow its growth. I am just worried it will hurt my koi over winter. Growth has slowed but it still is growing.

Hi Tom,

Once the winter hits everything in your pond will slow down due to water temp and weather. The algae will still grow but in very slow paceSmile

What will hurt your koi?

rgds,
Jon

Thank you for your response, what I thought was I had read something about someone opening there pond to find the fish had died and the pond was full of algae and there gills where full algae. And that would just kill me I love my babies.

Try using Koi clay it works very well for controling or eliminating SA.

Hello, Plants and alge will Slow or STOP growing if not entierly die back! Ther is something you may not know!!!!!There are different types of alge, of which grow under different situations, so, The scrubbing and brushing is something I would not recomend! Th reason is that , Although string alge will adhrere to the sides, by scrubbing you are also remove very benificial bacterias which in the long run can help maintain the string alge! These bacterias live in the MOSS that is on the sides of your pond, ( natural biological filtration) so , think about a U.V filter and do some manual labor to get most of this string alge out! String alge has a very difficult time to try to grow where there is little photosynthasis, in other words , where there is not much sun! This can also be controled by U.V filtration !

UV lights do not effect String Algae, try the Koi clay per the directions and it should keep the SA in control.

Hello, I will check into this more! Since we see that string Alge does not seem to grow in shaded ponds! I know that I have a shaded pond, and I dont have any problems, as to where the one that is in the sun does have some S.A! Thank you!

Hi there,
Glad to hear back from people, Things I have tried, My pond is half in the shade, I also have 2 uv's which do not work with string algae, and they are also off for the winter. I do use clay regularly in my pond and I use the barley bales, and I also cleaned it out with a toilet brush continuely, I also started near the end of the season using Carefree fountain oxidizer. Which I feel was working ,But it is still growing at a slowed rate.
Next year I will quaritine the plants that I put in the pond. I quartine the fish but didn't think about the plants and I know that is how I got it, Where I get my plants they came into the store with it and the store has also had a hard time with it. So hopefully as spring rolls around I can get on top of the situation.
Have a great daySmile
