water hycinaths dying off Can't Post

SmileHi everyone: Our water hyanciths are dying off or really looking bad. I checked the ph and it is fine. All water reading are fine. I have 5 koi in a 1200gallon pond that 2 years old. The koi are about 2 years old now too. Any suggestions? We are 2years into the koi hobby and learning.

Thanks
Gary and Gayle

ARE YOU SALTING YOUR POND? WATER HYACINTHS DON'T LIKE SALT. THEY ALSO NEED LOTS OF SUN. MY HUSBAND SAYS AFTER THEY FLOWER THEY DIE (THEY USUALLY HAVE PUT OUT PUPS THOUGH). I TAKE EVERYTHING HE SAYS WITH A GRAIN OF SALT.

We dont add salt. I think we figured out what happened. My hubby was spreading weed and feed in the back yard with his hand. I think the dust from him spreading it floated in the air and landed on the plants in the pond. We also lost 2 fish. We drained the pond and put the fish in another smaller pond. We lost a 3 year old koi and a newer one we had bought last week died too. But through all of this, we found some baby koi (5) what a nice site. We caught them before the pond was totally drained and put them in a huge pot on the back porch.

Thanks for your suggestions

hello, this maybe your problem, like all plants, water hyacinths need some sort of source for nutrients, and this comes from all the decomposing materials in the pond, so if you have a filtration system, then there is no decomposing material, so the plant may get sun for but it need more. Also koi love to play with ( destroy) plants, so this could be part of the problem as well they do not like the cold!Try putting some Hyacinths in a plastic tub of clean water ,and put this next to the pond, you will see the ones in the pond grow better! This is also the reason their roots are so fiberous. That is to filter and catch things!
