water not crystall clear Can't Post

Ive had my koi pond for more than 2 years. It's clear but not crystall clear like some other deeper ponds. My pond size is 2.5 ft deep, 5 ft wide and 12ft long. I have a vortex filter 24 in diameter, brush filter 1.5 ft by 2 ft. and Japanese matting at 1.5ft by 5 ft. its is has 2 pumps. 1 is 450 gals/hr and the other 550 gals/hr. The pond is outdoors but has roofing. only a part of it is hit by direct sunlight. The water is yellowish to brownish. Is this brown algae? I think my filter is working becoz the fish look healthy and energetic. and the water clearity does not seem to get worse. Although the fishes are very heathy, i just want my water crystall clear like the others that i have seen.

hi,

it might be due to DOC. check out DIY protien skimmer of koi38. Thats what I am doing now.

you did not indicate if you have UV or not.

Hi, thanks for replying, but what's a DOC? is the protein skimer your talking about the same as the one's used in salt water aquiriums? I don't have UV, thought i won't need it becoz the whole pond is under a roof and is shaded at all sides with wall and curtain. the only place that is not shaded is the part where i feed them which is only 3 ft wide gap. which is also hit by sunlight for a few hours a day, but i have closed the curtain permanently now except when i feed the fishes.

What color is the water?Do you flush it often through drain valves?

Brownish or yellowish water is not good.. it is a sign of bad and dirty water. ( looks like you are under filtered)

lightly greenish is ok.

koi's are hardy fish but sooner or later the koi will eventually get sick and die if good water is not maintained.

dissolved organic compound. do a search on it and you will find lots of info relating to your situation.

yes, same as used in a salt water setup. protein skimmer or refractionator. it will remove the slight coloring of the water and smell.

when you mentioned clear, do you mean being able to see a coin clearly at the bottom of your pond? do you have bubble foam on the surface? if your answer is yes to both, then you might just need a skimmer.

if you can't see the coin clearly, you might need a uv.

cheers
