Hi Jeff,

I still cannot figure out how one can run air bubbles up through the Bakki Shower. Could you please
elaborate further as to how it could be done.

Many Thanks in Advance,
Thiam Hwa

This is a quote from one of Doc Conrad's Postings

"Many folks have documented how aerated trickle tower or shower filters outperform submerged media filters in fresh water service. So there is no doubt about the effect. I have done around 50 experiments on that subject myself with appropriate controls. TT's and shower filters reduce nitrates an order of magnitude better than submerged media filters. Submerged media filters reduce nitrates better when the media is heavily aerated, so enough degassing of the submerged media may make submerged media filters close to trickle tower and shower filters.

Okay, now you want to know why?

Yes, I have researched that subject for a few years now. I have read approximately 1000 published research papers by the professional biofiltration community trying to understand why myself.

After all that home experimental work, and all that reading of the scientific community's data, I think the reason trickle towers and shower filters reduce nitrates is that they don't form nitrates in the first place. As has been shown in many, many biofiltration research papers, if a trickle tower or shower filter is used, a cloud of nitrous oxide and nitric oxide comes off the media from those filters. The researchers show that such aerobic biofiltration converts nitrite directly to nitric oxide and nitrous oxide which then simply goes off into the air. No nitrate formed, therefore none to reduce.

I have verified that many times in my preferred shower filter DIY (Do It Yourself) cheap biofilters by observing the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate in the original cycling of a virgin biofilter. The ammonia comes up, then the nitrite comes up, but never a trace of nitrate to measure."

Dear TH, I modified my bakki shower into 3 columns instead of the usual bakki trays to cut down the noise level as the pond is right outside the bedrooms in case she who must be obeyed make loud protestsWink.

Basically, I use a 8in pvc tube full of 1 inch holes and then encase it in a 12in pvc tube to reduce spray. As the water gets piped down the inner pipe full of lava rocks at high velocity, it sucks in and mixes air from the outer column. This works very well as a lot of foam is created at the base outlets of the pipes. I am now toying with putting airstones into the bakki columns to introduce more air to promote greater degassing.

The pond has been commissioned since December, and green water is only now slowly coming under control. See pics attached.

Best Regards,
Jeff

Hello Jeff,

Thank you so much for posting the pictures of your Bakki Shower and pond. This is my first time
seeing a DIY Bakki Shower using pvc piping. A very clever idea indeed for cutting down on the noise from
the showering water.

You have a very beautiful pond there and I hope our local koi club would include this into their pond visits
schedule. I think this shall be one of those pond visit which I will certainly not miss.

Best Regards,
Thiam Hwa
