Mohan, Wow! stayed up so late to post the photos ... TQ brudder. I must say that the turn out was good and I believe for many learned a thing or two. SOme were there to get ideas for their new pond while others were looking out to impprove their water management. GOOD TURNOUT AND KEEN LEARNERS We have a senior member who had about gave up the hobby but on his wife's encouragement, he has renewd his interest and is shopping for "new" ways to design a state of the art pond at his new home. I had the opportunity to chat with him about his experience using the latest technology of the day but yet did not yield the results he had hoped for. EBfore the memrgence of the net and Koi forums, what little we know come from fellow hobobyist and dealers but almost always, the practices of the day seldom come with any indepth explainations of why a certain system works.WHile there are no single cure all prescription to water management, today with the world wide web, Hobbyist can be very well informed if they take the effort to surf. Take for example; why do we need 30 percent surface area for the filter? Why is a trickle tower or a Bakki shower effective in solving nitrate problem. BIG POND Lets look at Dr Zhang's pond. It is 30 ftX 9ftX6ft. His filter is about 20% surface area of his pond. He operates 2 shower system. His pond has 2 bottom drain(BD)s. His BD has a 2 pipe system. These are then covered with a big flower pot ringed by a air diffuser. One 3" pipe discharges directly to the drain. must of the shit is flushed out through this pipe. The other pipe is raised 18" above the bottom feeds water to the 1st chamber of his filter. BIG FILTER His filter is of a straight flow design and about 20% surface area of the pond. Water travels up down and to the mechanical section of his filter which is filled with brushes and no aeration here to allow solids to settle. Moving on to his biological section which is modeartely aerated are brushes again. He uses brushes for most part of his filter. From here, water travels to the pump chamber through a few rows of biorings hung in nettings to act as biological filter. This area is also moderatley aerated. The water is pump up the 2 Bakki shower system one at each end of the pond. which are made of stacked up milk crates. The shower system is covered with plastic sheets on its side to prevent splashing. Both the showers systems are then partially camourflaged by wood work and brick work to improve aesthetics. GREEN WATER CHALLENGE He has close to 50 kois at one time. mostly 40's to 50's cm. His water has been going yoyo and his last bid to get clear water was installing 3 or 4 20 watt Uv lamps. Unfortunately they burned out 1 week B4 the pond visit. and the water truend slightly greenish. FAST GROWING AND HEALTHY KOIS Dr Zhang is as he says, learning to keep koi with lower end ones and at 20 to 30 cm at time of purchase. As we have expected, his kois grew very fast in his long pond. SO from the standpint of good growth and disease free, his pond has been successful. His challenge will be to improve water quality to achieve low nitrate levels and to get clear water without the UV lights. HOW CAN DR ZHANG IMPROVE HIS WATER? This brings us back to the issue of nitrates and its relation to the filter system.... This is an interested subject and ai would like to keep this part free for discussuion amongts members here to share their ideas on how Dr Zhang can improve his water. YOUR SUGGESTIONS PLEASE>>>>
