Hi Thia Hwam,

Thanks for your Prompt response. I know that you have a burning desire to see members' pond n it must have
been a long wait for you.I believe this must be an exciting year for members bcus the club had planned
a number of interesting events for members.May god give us the strength to make it happen.

I inserted the time in the heading but it somehow disappeared. Well the excitement starts at 2.30pm.There
is no formality but no harm informing DR. TEH so that he can plan ahead.
The good news is that all KOI Forum members who are yet to be members are welcome BUT you must let
us know in advance.
Some of the kois purchased during the recent trip to Japan will in DR's pond.

Hi Mohan,

You are right. I have been very patiently waiting for an opportunity/excuses to call on Dr.Teh for a pond visit for quite a while now and am certainly very pleased to see your posting on the visit.
The time of 2.30 pm is fine with me and as usual I will be there with my other half and little girl for this visit. See you all then.

Cheerio,

Comments on the 1st Pond Visit

The first pond visit organized by the new committee to Dr Teh's house went on smoothly. The members came in large numbers.

Our club's Assistant Secretary Mr Hwong entertained the members to a video show on the last trip to the Home land of the kois together with his interesting comments.
Later' Dr Teh explained about his pond and he compared and contrasted the BAKKI shower with the Conventional System.

The members were not only entertained to delicious snack and drinks but some of DR Teh's beloved kois were netted for a closer enjoyment.

Here are some of the pix for those who had missed all of it.

Mohan,
Thanks for posting some of the photos to share with our forum members. First we have Dr Teh to thank for being a generous host. A big thank you to the 40+ enthusiastic koi kichis, who came in support of the event.

Although it didnt show on the photos, this was a joyous occassion. We cracked jokes and laughed at the anecdotes told during the Koi hunting presentation with some at the expense of our Big Strong and Friendly PresidentLaugh. In the excitement of the moment, I forgot to share a few tips for the trip.

The show and tell session by Dr Teh on his Bakki shower experiment must have gotten some kichis to stand up and pay attention. His conclusions as applicable to his pond setup are :
  1. An adequately configured Bakki shower can perform as well as a conventional fliter.
  2. You preferably shud have a mechanical or settlement chamber for catching the solid waste.
  3. The shower did not improve the DO in his pond set up.
  4. No trace of Ammonia, nitrite but nitrate remain similar to his water source
  5. Water is very fresh and crystal clear.

For people who have limited space but want maximize their pond area can do so with a settlement chamber and a Bakki shower system.

On how Dr Teh grew kois big and fast in a small pond. His formula is exactly the same as the thread Tao wrote about his friend's experience in Thailand.
  1. Lots of aeration, which will maintain high DO. this makes the kois have more appetite.
  2. Remove solid waste to prevent them from decaying and putting extra load on the aerobic bacteria.
  3. Feed good quality food in small quantities and many feedings per day.
  4. daily water change to keep water fresh.
  5. Good quality kois will helpCool

Perhaps the good Doctor can add his own comments to reinforce or correct what I have written here.
To sum it all, the response from the member is very encouraging. This motivates us to organise more of such events. The next one will be in April.

Cheers

Re: [HWONG] Pond Visit-DR.Teh's house-25th Feb 06(saturday) [In reply to] Can't Post

HWong, yes, a word of thanks to Dr.Teh for his hospitality. I would just like to add that Dr.Teh's kois are indeed a privileged lot because they live in an enriched environment provided for by the good doc. As a result they grow and maintain themselves very well.

Thanks for mentioning the results of the experiment with the Bakki shower too. It seems like the results are just as good as what doc has been getting with his previous extensive filtration system. There is little doubt that one could save on space as compared to the conventional submerged multichambered filter.

I'm alittle concerned with the cost of the setup and maintenance. The BH, the stainless steel trays, the pumps to provide the 2.5 times turnover rate and their power consumption all adds up considerably. Smile
Always friendly :)

Re: [dttk] Pond Visit-DR.Teh's house-25th Feb 06(saturday) [In reply to] Can't Post

First of all, on behalf of my family and ZNA committee, I thank all of you for having taken time off to attend our club's 1st pond visit.

Hwong, I have very little to add other than the fact that one should make it simple and use all the facts and experiences of fellow hobbyists as far as filtration system goes.

Dr Tan, I did a calculation to compare the cost between the Bakki Shower/Bacteria House system and my conventional filters. If one factors in the land cost (in this case the conventional filters take up a lot of land space) they both cost about the same. Maintenance-wise they use the same number of pumps. As a sideline regarding what is the ideal filter size, I personally believe that it depends on a few factors which include pond size, nos of kois, feeding regimen, exposure to sunlight etc etc. As for my pond my minimum filter size should be 80%.

Thanks again guys.

Thanks, Dr Teh for your hospitality and insights.

Can you recommend a contractor who can do a pond and bakki shower system?

Hi CD,

From what I know, there are very few, if any at all, contractors who know how to build a proper koi pond (ie a pond with a good filtration system) so called koi pond specialists included. I have heard too many horror stories over the years. However if one gives a contractor a proper description and diagram(s) most of them can do a good job. Planning is of utmost importance. There are many who can help on this aspect. Do enough pond visits and you will realise what works and what don't. If you cannot find anyone (reliable) to help you the ZNA committee will be glad to be of assistance. PM me if you need further discussion.

Cheers.

Hi dtbh,

Tao BKK's thread on Koi in 8.5 tons pond is in the Koi Appreciation Section.
From the posting of the kois collection, I think the Thai hobbyist has certainly
achieved the utimate filter system in a small pond.

Best Regards,
