Are these early signs of ULCERS? Can't Post

Hello, I've signed up in this forum in order to acquire feedback if my diagnosis for my pet Koi are showing possible symptoms of the parasite disease, ulcers. This one Tancho has exhibiting a strange injured mark on his/her left side. Now it seems that it's been inflammed throughout his/her body. He/she usually swims using only one of its pectoral fins. The body is also exhibiting reddish areas on its scales. The way that the Koi swims is also distinguishable from the rest--usually vertically hanging, and glopping its mouth somewhat heavily; and at times, it swims frantically like it's chasing something. I'm afraid that it might die if I don't act quickly to treat this disease. Please tell me on how to treat the disease ulcers. I've researched about it and some sites suggest that I quarrantine this Koi from the rest of the bunch and add salt to it. Does this mean I add regular table salt at home, or do I have to go out and buy some specialized salt. Also, I've read that I need to use malachite green or acriflavin after the adding in the salt. It seems that another Tancho from my aquarium is exhibiting the same, but not so worse, condition. My goal is to look for someone to help me on how to treat ULCERS.

Thank You.

Yinh,

Pictures please. We need proper identification of the disease before suggesting means of treatment.

Hi Yinh,

I agree with our friend. You have to give more details about your pond: a) What capacity? How many kois? How big are they? What filter system do you need?

EMERGENCY MEASURES:
1) Put your sick kois in another tank before they make your other kois sick.
2) Try SALT. Salt is a first aid treatment. Use rock salt or sea salt. DO NOT USE IODIZED salt. It can kill your fish. If your quarantine tank is small. Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt per gallon of water. If your tank is big, dissolve 1 pound of salt per 100 gals of water. Dissolve the salt in a pail before pouring it to the tank. DO NOT THROW SOLID SALT INTO THE TANK. If your kois eat them in big quantity, they will DIE.
3) Along with the salt, you can add TETRACYCLINE CAPSULE 500 mg (1 capsule per 20 gals water). Combine it with Methylene Blue (5 drops per 1 gals).
4) If there is sign of improvement, make 30 to 50 % water change and dissolve same proportion of salt and medicine that is displaced by the water change.
5) According to koi lovers, you can increase salt treatment concentration up to 3 teaspoon per gal or 3lbs per 100 gals. But I would rather play safe by doing a maximum of 2 teaspoon per gals.
5) If there is no sign of improvement after 3 days, try FURUSAN, it a yellowish JAPANSES KOI DECEASE powder. One of my koi used to have a coin-size ulcer that ate through the flesh and reached the bone. It got healed with FURUSAN but left an ugly ulcer.

TREAT YOUR ENTIRE POND:
1) It seems like your entire pond has already been infected because another koi has become sick. If you do not treat the entire pond, all others will sooner or later get sick.
2) Make a 75% water change. If your water source is from the tap, put ANTI-CHLORINE or DECHLORINATOR SOLUTION. If you do not do so, the chlorine in the water will poison your kois. Apply it according to instruction on the label. In the Philippines where I live, the dosage is 1 teaspoon per 10 gals of water.
3) Do salt treatment using the dosage mentioned. If you have plants in the pond, remove them because salt can kill your plants or make them turn yellow.

CHECK YOUR FILTER SYSTEM: Usually, the fish got sick because the water quality is bad... because your filter system is insufficient. If your filter system does not produce healthy water for your kois, you can use as much medicine as you can afford and your kois will not stop getting sick.

Healthy water makes healthy kois. Healthy kois makes happy you!

Dear Yinh

First thing first get some test kit and check your water. My first thought is that the ammonia levels have been raised. So test for ammonia nitrites and nitrates but the first 2 are the main priority.

Then do 25% water change. Reduce feeding or even stop feeding for a week.

check out your filters and only clean the machanical parts. If you have bottom drains use them, if you have rocks gravel plants ect in your pond remove them and if you don't have bottom drains try your best to remove with a fine net any sludge on the bottom of the pond.

if you can remove your fish for a week or so say to a tempary pond you could bomb the pond with Pottasium Permagnigate.

then gradualy after the pond has been cleaned put your fish back gradualy over a few weeks and re-seed your filters with liquid bacteria for filters you might whant to put the females in first say, then selected males for a breeding program.

Thanks to everyone who have replied. I found out that it was the high concentration in Ammonia content that'd been causing the disease for my two Tanchos. I assume it was because I used tap water and wasn't informed of the amount of Ammonia lurking in it. It did seem that the two Tanchos were in stress--due to their inflamed bodies and cascading streaks of red veins on their fins. So far they've been recovering slowly but surely. I've also made sure to check our family's aquarium from having too much Ammonia concentrations to prevent future diseases for the Kois. Again, thanks to everyone for their time and feedbacks.
