Bladder problem Can't Post

Hi hobbyist,

Does any one know if a koi with damaged bladder ever get healed. I am tyring to rescue a koi which has been suffering from a damaged bladder for the past one month. So far there isn't much progress. It has to reside in a shallow pond of 1 foot deep, a deeper pond is giving her a lot of trouble.

Regards,

Dear Koi-kp

I Suspect you are talking about swim bladders, as koi don't realy have a urine bladders.

To some extent swim bladders will heal depending on how sever the damage is, and if it was physical bacterial or viral damage. All of these forms of damage can leave scare tissue on the swim bladder and affect the swimming behavoir of the fish depending on the severity of the damage.

Shallow ponds tend to help fish regain an amount of stability but not always the best idea for long term. As long as the fish is feeding well and dosent look to distressed best to leave it alone.

It might never heal correctley but as long as it isnt suffering it could live a full life without interferance.

Dear Zoul,

Thanks for the information. What would be your proposal for the long term? Apparently, over the past month, the koi has developed body deformation. Also as she is using her dorsal fin to support herself on the pond floor, the fins have become deformed as well.

I have increased the air bubbling and this seems to have given more bouyancy to the koi and is helping her to float up to the surface for food. I am giving her sinking food as supplement which has given her more energy to float up to the surface for the floating pellets.

For a fish to float, I am guessing that it is absorbing air from the water and inflate its bladder with air to gain flotation. Is this correct?
