How to know the koi health, be4 it dead

Hi there,
I'm new here and this is my 1st post, as I'm quite worry my kois... as It happened that all my koi dead within 1 wk to my pond. 
But, I havent give-up n add new 9 kois (japan 1, abt below 30cm) to my pond now... n they r seem to ok...
Recently (19/3/07), I added new kois (malaysia koi) to my pond as my sister said they dont wana them n my dad insist to put them to the pond... even I have try my best to say no to him (as he still my dad)... so Wat I do is to QT them for nearly 3wks n add S1 for 3 days... be4 I put them to my pond, I still try to 'check' the koi, as I still notice some of them have red spots... so I only add the 1 seem ok for me (abt 9 kois)....
Last 2 days, I noticed I missed my Utsuri (japan) n the others kois like to hide when I try to close to them. But they still can eat n swim like normal... just like to hiden when some 1 close to them.... even me... I suspect that the water level was too high last few days n the missed koi was cach by neighbor cat (now I hate cat n try to hav a clever dog)...
Now, My concern are:
1. How to improve my reading skill to 'check' the koi health... n treatment to the koi, be4 it come worse... I jst dont wana to see my kois dead and then learn from the mistake.... although I know normally experience are from mistake we done...
2. Any 1 here have good reference koi book, n can share wth me... or anything abt to improve my skill. I stay at North KL.

P/S my pond have 2 separate pond, but water is 'link'. I put all my 8 jap carps at deep 1 n 9 malaysia carps with 21 gold fishs at smaller 1.
