KOI died today.. Can't Post

Unsure I have a small pond 700g or so, 6 KOI, put in last year and have grown good to about 3 times there original size. I have never had any problems with them, shut pump off for winter, had good air pump & ice heater in. 3.25 foot deep pond & had approx 6" ice (I live in Canada). The ice thawed about 3 weeks ago, all 6 were swimming around and looked fine. Last week I noticed one swimming around weird (bumping into the walls, slow & at times surfacince for air), I put the filter system(BIO... Cleaned) in and turned pump on. Yesterday I noticed the one fish on its side on the bottom, went to scoop it with the net and it swam off (slow on its side) to the top gasping. This am I put it into a pale with the pond water, fish didn't move much at all. It died by noon, scales looked good but lost some color, small amount of blood viens in lower portion of tail fin & looked slightly bloated in the belly.

The other 5 are very active and look fine. I haven't tested the water yet it is clear from debres and I have changed out about 10%. Could this be a parasite and is there a danger of the others being affected? Oh and when do you recommend I start feeding the fish, water temp today was 45F, they were eyein me up for food all day Smile

Thanks for any advise!!!

Dear Derwood509

Its never a good idea to turn your filters off even for winter. As Nature calls says anarobic bacteria such as aromonus and persudo aromonas can live on debris in the bottom of the pond.

When your filter is not running the airobic bacteria in the nitrofication system stop functioning but your fish are still producing waiste, anarobic bacteria will soon colonise your filters if the water is turned off.

From the sounds of things i would say your levels of amonia and nitrites have got out of hand and your fish was stressed by this and then even more stressed by being placed in a bucket.

Now the filters are starting from scratch again and you might be having new pond syndrome.

See about getting some fresh start bacteria for your filters. And try not to teurn them off for long periods of time, the good bacteria will start dying straight away but the bad bacteria will take over in 36 hours so dont leave your filters off for more than a couple of hours if you can help it.

Re: [zoul] KOI died today.. [In reply to] Can't Post

Actually now that I read that other forum on Dropsy, I did notice on the rear lower portion on one side the scales kinda outward so this must have been the case. I spoke with a lady at a garden store here, she works in the pond section and has her own pond at home, she recommended I keep a low or .1% aqua salt in my pond at all times, that plants shouldn't die from it and it will help keep the fish healthier.

I'm not sure what I can do for the winter months as it gets down to - 20C or so, to keep my pump moving water up to the filter then down a stream to a waterfall would not work well as it would freeze and the pump would eventually push the water out of the pond.

I will definately keep the pond cleaner this summer tho and may remove the small rocks on the bottom for ease to clean.

Thanks for your help all!!
