Koi's jumping and swimming on its side Can't Post

Pond and fish have been ok for the last 3 years and thrived. We had to remove one fish that had a white patch on the side of the body, the body of the fish was crooked and was moving with difficulty. After that, rest of the kois started to act strangely. They tend to stick to a corner or group together at the bottom of the pond. Some kois lie on bottom of pond with fins close. Couple of them thrash around and jump out of the water. One swims turning from side to side. Appreciate any advice you can share on what could be disturbing the kois .....thanks !Angelic

for what you described, it's definitely either too much bateria or parasite on the koi. For reducing bacteria, you can change water clean up pond and filter, for parasite, you have to do a scope on a sick fish and determine what type of parasite and treat accordingly. If you do not have a microscope, a shotgun method can be used: treat the pond with parasite treatment. Please check all my post on parasite treatment. the white patch on the sick fish indicated that parasite is on the fish it can be SAP, Columnaris or Epistylis, Good luck then.

Dear springkoi

Your first suspect should always be water quality if you havent already invest some cash in a test kit that test Ammonia Nitrites and nitrates as well as PH.

Do regular water changes of no more than 25 % and make sure your filters are up to a high standard.

Then when the water is in tip top condition you can panic about parasites and harmful bacteria.

Hope this helps good luck.
