Kois scrapping//Kois show reddening on scales-NEED HELP

Hello. My Kois have been acting up. I have 8 Kois in a tank (aquarium, not pond). Sometimes I see them swimming and scrapping themselves amongst the sides and gravels of the tank. Also, right now their a couple of the fish show reddness along their bodies. I have one Tancho quarantined and it looks like he won't make it through the night. I have an inkling that all of the Kois are infected with some disease because they seem to swim very fast and scrapping and jumping round and round. There is only one filter and the pipe line at the end of the filter doesn't even catch all of the fecies (poop) all the way at the bottom of the gravel. Please tell me what I should do. My dad an I recently bought these Kois and I don't want them to be in any discomfort. I'm new to Koi keeping. I heard that high nitrites (or is it nitrates?) cause the reddness along the body. I went to the Koi Garden and the clerk/salesperson told me to put in this chemical that cures flukes/ich. Nothing seemed to change their conditions. I don't have a water test kit to test the pH, Ammonia, etc., that can determine what the heck is going on. I even tried adding this fish chemical that removes Ammonia. Nothing changed. The Kois seem to be in a lot of stress and I feel helpless not knowing what to do. Please tell me what is happening to the Kois and how can I treat them. :-(
