Love is in the air!! Can't Post

Figured that would get everyones attention!
Couple of questions, first would be how to tell the sex of your koi, I'm really baffled on this one, because all of my larger Koi are chasing around a comet(with a extremely huge belly!!) I'm getting the feeling that all my Koi are male, Im not sure about the younger ones. Also, what excactly is a "pond Comet"?? My pond is a mess so to speak, I made the mistake of putting other fish in there, Shubunkins, comets Goldfish, Etc. I plan onn at the end of summer to drain my pond, and get them all out and put them in another pond I have. There so riskay, lotsa lovin goin on!! Smile

Looks like Cupid has shot his arrow into your pond! Would be rather romantic under the moonlight. Perhaps you can capture some of tender moments on film and post it for us to view. Hope it will pass the censorship board though. Ha Ha. [biggrin] I have been told that male koi are slimmer in shape while females are rounder in shape, but I am not sure, really. And I won't be wrong 'cos I read somewhere in this bulletin board of an interview with a seasoned Japanese breeder who observed that the sex of koi can change through time. This is an awesome revelation. If this is indeed true, I think it will be a major discovery and a first in the mysterious world of fish!

By the way, how's Dogleg? The last I heard he was lost and then found alive after his unfortunate encounter with lightning but I have lost touch with the latest news on Dogleg after that. Trust he is alive and flapping.

Best regards

yes also read a post by Mr Eric Lim that kois can change sex .. the question is whether the change is from male to female or female to male .. while I am no fish genetist, my educated guess is that it is more probable for a male fish to change to a female fish. On the other scenario of a female fish changing to a male fish, what would happen to the eggs? ... Nature surely has its limits right?

Anyone care to comment?

I will post this message in the same topic.

Thanks
Dennis

Doglegs doin great, has a hard time turning right though! Hes acting like everythings ducky, hungry as the rest of em and doesn't hesitate to shove the others out of the way! I'm very concerned that I may not have females, the one I was told was a pond comet has small wiskers like a koi (bit smaller though). Wasnt sure if a comet was a crossbreed, but it would screw up the theory about them being sterile, cause as I said, loves in the air, heh get out the gondolas boys, were going for a ride!! [biggrin]

You may want to read up the topic on Male & Female koi here.

Thanks Mark, for leading us to the discussion on "how to tell your koi's sex". I guess this takes experience and a trained eye. For now, I cannot, for the life of me, tell the difference.

Thanks for the news on Doglegs, WildBillKeso. Doglegs command my greatest respect as he (or she?) is a true survivor. First class attitude of "never say die", struck by lightning yet living life to the full, a true fighter. Smile

Best regards
