Need help with strange eating behaviour Can't Post

Hello all, I have one koi who is having trouble eating, will try and describe as best as i can (its a weird one!)

When I feed, he circles the food as the others do, but appears frustrated (told you it was weird) - he seems to be shaking his head. Then as he gets to the surface its as if he cant lift his head out of the water to eat the food. He swims around again very quickly until he takes a run at the surface and just as he gets to the food he flips onto his side, grabs a mouthfull (whilst hes side ways on the surface) and then shoots down shaking his head again.

When not feeding he is quite lively and appears ok, although not hanging around with the pack as he used to.

Its been going on for a week now. in the first few days he wasnt getting any food and seemed very angry that he couldnt get it, now hes mastered the art of eating during a side flip!

I did get him out and have a look at him, and I couldnt see anything odd. Gills appeared clear. His mouth was closed so couldnt look in there and dont know if there is a way of making him open his mouth.

I wondered if anyone had had anything like this?

Thanks for any advice.
Justin

Dear justin styles

Fish that isolate themselfs from the pack or schoal are not well fish, this is the first sighn to us that something isn't right.

It dose sound by your discription that your fish has something stuck in it's mouth, maybe a small rock lodged in the mouth. But as the mouth is closed more than likely your fish has eaten something like a wasp or some stinging insect.

If the fish is big enough you can gentley push your finger into the mouth and have a look. Most stones and such are ealy removed by the fish itself but sometimes you need to do it for them. Use a fine pair of blunt twizers.

Best not to have gravel in the pond.

Zoul
I managed to get him out at the weekend and had a good look in his mouth - all seemed clear, no signs of any stones. Gills also seem clear.

Gave him a 15 minute bath with anti parasite just in case.

He seemed better when I put him back, he went back to the others and stayed with them the rest of the day.

After that he deteriorated and is now not eating.

Its as if he has had a stroke! His head is always down. He swims up from the bottom and then its as if his head is too heavy and he ends up going back down (nose first) Like his balance is out??

Its so weird.

Any Other ideas?

Cheers
Justin
