Really Sick Fish Can't Post

Hi All

My name is Mike and I am based in the UK.

About 18 months ago I decided to actually do what I said I would do and build myself a pond. So I set about and made myself a 10ft x 5ft x 4ft above the ground pond. I bought myself the correct filtration system, UV & air pump. I filled my pond with water and on advice of a local reputable dealer added a filter start etc to get my water good.

Over that time I have been adding fish slowly and checking my water with a testing kit. I have never had any issues with my water.

Again on advice each time I add new fish to the pond I have been adding a chemical called Irradic which I was told would make sure any new fish added would get rid of any parasites they may have.

I now have a nice setup but all is not well. About 3 weeks ago I added 2 new fish. I added a siberian long nosed sturgeon & a koi but never put Irradic in the water, I don`t know why I didn`t as I do this religeously .. Unsure

Anyway, four days ago I lost the koi I had recently added to the pond. I looked him over for any obvious signs but he looked healthy to the naked eye. Yesterday I noticed that my Ghost Koi had like a white slime over his body. I was not able to do anything because it was too late to seek any advice. This morning I went to check on him and the disease has spread to some of my other fish. I went to my dealer who told me to do a 5 day course of irradic so I started the treatment today.

I have lost 2 of my smaller fish today .. Frown .. Again on inspection they looked fine and did not have this white slime on them however I had noticed that they were staying at the top of the pond and went very lathargic since yesterday.

I have 3 quite large Koi that are on top of the pond and looking lathargic ... Frown

I do not have the funds or the eqiptment to quarantine them so I am currently treating my whole pond. I am so gutted that I may lose my fish over something as stupid as not adding Irradic when the 2 new fish were added.

Does anyone know why my fish are forming this slime and why the fish that have died look okay ??

I am new to Koi keeping and ask for your help, I throw myself at your mercy for any info you can give me.

Thankyou

A very sad ... Frown

hi, mike, i do not know Iradic at all, can you direct me to a website sell Iradic, an analyze of this product probably i can help you some. Since you have using Iradic, there is not a thing we can help you put in your pond.
White slime, translucent some what, slowly spread all over fish body can be 2 things: Epithylis is some rare parasite can cause that, it look like SAP but it more translucent, it can eat up the fish until dead. The other thing is the heavy content of bacteria in your pond, it slowly eat the mucus and the skin of the fish. In spring time, the fish immune system is week, bacteria in pond is high, they can do damage as bad as parasite. the only way to differ the two, Epithylis and bacteria is a scope. I have this problem almost every year in my pond, spring time. I scope find nothing. Ask several expert none of the answer satisfied me. Finally i found that .3% will eliminate all in 2 days. Salt make fish itching, they produce more mucus, increase their inmune system and overcome bacteria. You can put the severed infected fish in a small bucket and treat .6% salt in 1 hour. However, you still keep .3% salt in your pond at least 2 week to make sure. You will see the white translucent thin layer drop down like a small piece of cloth. .3% salt, if Epythilis present, will eradicated them in 2, 3 days. Malachite green do not help.
