Sakai Inasuma- tragic end.

Today, early in the morning when I visited my small pond to feed my kois, I was disturbed when I saw my sakai Kohaku dead (bottom of the pond). Previous day, it was behaving very normally and in fact had a very good appetite. I did a post- mortem to find out the cause of death. I noticed that the koi was carrying a lot of eggs- almost the whole body was full of eggs. It was having difficulty swimming. It was swimming using the force from its tail fin. One dealer who visited me told me it must have broken its tail fin. I now realize it was swimming in that manner because of the congestion of the eggs. The eggs impaction not only made the koi swim awkwardly but it also retarded its growth. The size is about 62cm or so only compared to my Danachi showa which had hit the 75cm mark. Mistake made I mistakenly assumed that the awkward swimming condition was because of a fracture of the tail fin (as suggested by the very experience dealer) or an internal problem. In fact, I was getting ready to spawn it or do an induced spawning as suggested by Wong Hee Heng in his article in our recent Malaysia Koi Show and championship 2008 magazine. In order to promote growth in female kois, it is a must to spawn them otherwise we will face with the problem, I was confronted with. If natural spawning is not possible, it is advisable to go for induced spawning. In this connection, I urge all koi hobbyist to read Wong’s very educative and helpful article. I hope Wong can reproduce it here for the benefit of our forum members who cannot lay their hands on the magazine. Risk There is also a risk in spawning. The koi can come out of it in a dilapidated condition or may even pass off. In this connection, I would like to cite the example of Kato San’s all time infamous Inasuma Showa which died during spawning. (Kato San always puts on a badge which carries the logo of this famous Showa). Advice Look out for your female kois and save them by spawning. Spawning also helps to improve growth and the health of the koi. I made a drastic mistake by delaying it – one too many mistake - some is too costly in this hobby. Some pixs of the operated koi which will give you food for thought.
TRAGIC DEATH! Hkk Mohan.
