Treated Koi w/Nitrofurazone...cured it Can't Post

I treated my koi with the Nitrofurazone, I posted about this stuff. Of course you have to wrap the Koi in a wet towel, dab the ulcer dry and then put this stuff on the ulcer. Within about 4 days, the ulcer was gone. Fish was healed and back in pond again. It worked great. Ladies, do not handle the actual ointment. It an cause problems in women. So I was told. The pond guy says it works great. You can also get it in powder form. But I haven't found it yet.

Hello, Did you use an anesthetic? Thats the best and safest way to do any type of work on the koi, and it makes the job 100% easier! And if you did, how did you do it? Also you should always you gloves, that is to protect the koi, as much as yourself from chemicals to infections.

Hi Jim
We didn't use any anesthetic. We can only find clove oil and not sure how much to put in some water. Still looking for the information how to that. We where told to use a wet towel and wrap the koi, work over the water. I found if you cover the eyes they are calmer. You don't need gloves, I was told by the Pond Man to just wet your hands. We put the towel into the tank and then lifted the fish out. Dab the wound to dry it then put the meds on and put the fish back into the water. That's how we did it. If you know the dose to anesthize I would love it. I would use clove as that is what we could find. Thanks, Lynda

Re: [femme_artist51] Treated Koi w/Nitrofurazone...cured it [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello Lynda, This is one basic way that I have treated my koi ,I knock my koi OUT!! I use a drug called BENZOCAINE!!!! This drug is used in the Salmon industry to tranquilize or put to sleep Salmon, So look at FARM SUPPLY OR VET. SUPPLY COMPANIES! Also Dentistry dealers!!! I use 20ml in a 5 gal bucket! This is a liquid! I have a table laid out with all the things I will use, I first catch the guy, Then I put him into the bucket, he will float ( be asleep) in about 2 minuts. ( I mean like he is DEAD), Then I take him out of that bucket and on the table I have a small tray with about 1 inch of water ( from the pond). I use surgical gloves because it makes handling him easier, plus it is more sterile! I then have him on his side in the tray so he still has water going into his gills on one side, and I gently clean the bad area with a BABIES tooth brush dipped in HYDROGEN PEROXIDE, I gently wipe the area with the brush , cleaning and dipping it in the peroxide, there may be some SLIGHT bleeding!! After this is done I finish the area with IODINE, I paint this on or over the treated are with a fine paint brush, the back into a recovery tank ALONE!! The effects of this drug last about 5 minuts, then the koi will start to move and make things more difficult! So I have a small dishes ready with the Hydro, and Iodine already. Make sure not to get any of this in their eyes gills or mouth, if you seem to get some in, put them into the water to wash this away! They will be DRUNK for the rest of the day! Then after a few days I through them back with the rest! There are so many reasons why you want to put them to sleep to work on them, # 1 is the strees caused to them, #2 is you can actualy work on them, and 3 it is safer because you dont have to worry about them jumping out and hurting them selvies! Let me know if I can help you more!

Hey Jim
Thanks for the info. Your system sounds interesting, a drunk fish. I think it sure would be easier than wrapping the koi in a wet towel and trying not to freak the fish out. I am printing your info and putting into my koi folder. I am collecting all types of info on Koi and Koi treatment. Also breeding them. Again thanks for the info, been looking all over the net on how to knock a Koi out for treatment. Lynda
