high ammonia low ph Can't Post

We have a 1200 gallon pond with 4 koi that are 5 and 6 years old; living in Hillsboro, Oregon. Since we changed the filter to an Ultima II in July (what a waste of money), the pond has not ever been in balance, with ammonias running high and PH creeping low. Even in the winter with water temperatures low and no feeding, the ammonia within a few days of water changes or Amquel, starts to climb. We tried seeding the filter with Microbe Lift and later, when that apparently did not work, some kind of dry bacteria. Nothing seems to work. They are getting very stressed and it is affecting their skin. I do not know what to do. Any ideas would be appreciated! Thanks

HI Sbishop
If your getting ammonia readings and ph problems maybe its not the filter but a kh problem. Some filters are more carbonate eaters than others , if they don’t have the kh they cant function. ?

Thanks for the response. I hate to appear so ignorant when the life of my fish is on the line, but what exactly is Kh? Thanks so much!

Hi sbishop.
Kh stands for carbonate hardness of the water, the carbonates and bicarbonates buffer the ph the filter bacteria lower the ph when there converting the ammonia so this has to be replaced .put simply.
If the bacteria don’t have the (buffers/carbonates) they can’t function.
I don’t know your filter but I have looked it up, looks similar to a bubble bead with k1 type media, iv heard that bubble beads need more kh in comparison to other filters?
Ammonia is less toxic at lower ph.
You should be able to get your water tested at your local aquarium shop normally for free or buy testers.

If your kh is low you can buffer this up with baking soda I don’t use this so hopefully some one will help you.
If not Put a new post in the Pond Water Quality section
Hope this helps
John

Thank you John, very much for the explanation and taking the time to look up the filter. I will look into it right away and hopefully keep them living and healthy.

Re: [sbishop] high ammonia low ph [In reply to] Can't Post

in the mean time, frequent partial water change, good aeration to blow the ammonia off and nothing that would disturb the bacterial flora of the filter, i.e. no antibiotics or cleaning or anything like that. expect a spike in nitrite as the ammonia problem resolves as this is the next product in the nitrogen cycle. Nitrites can be more damaging to fish but when dealing with premature filter system, this will also need to be weathered out. Transplanting filter material from known clean source is another way of speeding up the process. I personally think that bacteria in a bottle doesn't really work.
