?lice infestation Can't Post

CrazyHi, I have been absent from the forum for over a year, with all going well with the pond and koi. Now the fairy koi has a pink section near the tail fin, with a "furry" look here as the scales are raised. There is also what appears like a loose scale with apoint of attachment to the head near the left eye. The koi is otherwise looking well and feeding normally.

Is this a lice infestation? If so, what treatment is needed? If not, what is the diagnosis and treatment for this condition?

Thanks in advance.

The furriness sounds like cotton wool fungus (aka saprologenia). It has a furry look to it, and grows as a result of damage to the mucus coat on the fish. Treatment to cotton wool fungus is with the malachite green/methylene blue anti-fungal solution lightly dabbed onto the area once every 3-4 days until it has dropped off and the slime coat has healed.

...of course it could be something eleseUnsure

CrazyThanks for the reply. Some friends suggested tetracycline treatment for bacterial infection. Perhaps I will try both, since your suggestion is for a topical (local) application and the tetracycline is added to the water in which the affected koi is isolated.

Hello, Although I do not All the situation, what I would do is treat this as SAP! # 1 and # 2 we need more details! How big is your pond, ? How many Koi do you have? What is the temp . of the water! P .H ect! The more details the better!

CrazyIt's a small pond of about 1000 litres, and there are 11 koi of varying sizes. The affected koi is the largest of the lot, about 18 inches long excluding the long tail, and is about 3.5 years old. I am in Singapore and the water temperature is about 30 deg C. Have not checked the other parameters yet. I will isolate the koi tomorrow and try tetracycline treatment, with local application of an anti-fungal, like methylene blue to the affected section. The other koi look quite healthy.

TongueWell, I isolated the koi yesterday and had a good look at the affected area. It is not lice, for sure, after checking out a koi book. The skin is inflammed and causes the scales to be raised. Treated with tetracycline in the bath with very diluted methylene blue as well as local application of methylene blue, just prior to transferring back to the pond after about an hour in the bath. At this time the fish was quite lethargic, and would feed only on the algae on the pond wall.

This morning, the affected area looks much the same, but the koi is quite active. May repeat the treatment tomorrow or on Friday. Will also check the water parameters, when I can!
