need help! Can't Post

Hello,

I am new to this forum. I joined because I need some help urgently. Three days ago, I bought two 5 inch koi. I am concerned about them for the following reasons.

1. The two koi are not as active as I think they should be. They do not sit on the bottom, but they are often near the bottom of the tank.
2. The two koi sometimes stay together, but sometimes they do not.
2. One of them jumped out, and I was fortunate to notice it soon after it happened so I put it back in the water.
3. The one that jumped out has a good appetite, but the other one has not eaten anything yet and doesn't come to the surface when I throw in food.

I checked the water parameters today. My ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, chlorine are all 0 ppm. The pH is close to neutral. My GH is around 25 and my KH is around 40. The temperature is 74 Fahrenheit. I have strong filtration and I think the water is well oxygenated.

What could be wrong with my fish? Is this behavior normal? I am beginning to think that they might have parasites, so I am thinking of using aquarium salt. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Hi Adel, there is nothing wrong with your Koi, just shy to the new environement, sometime it take weeks before they can act normal. Have your quarantine your Koi? got to do it then. and do not do anything without asking since you are new. A wrong medecine can only do harm. Aquarium salt do not help eliminate parasite, just may be one or two. Check my post before to see how to deal with parasite. Enjoy your new venture, i bet you it will be fun down the road, and also a lot to learn too.

Hi needucho,

Thanks for your response. I decided to quarantine the koi that does not eat since I am more concerned about him. The only place I had to put him in was my goldfish tank. The goldfish are doing fine, but this koi still prefers to stay near the bottom. Since I can observe him more closely now, I noticed that he has a strange shivering or shaking motion. What could be wrong with him? I have attached some pictures of him.

the fact that he has a shaking motion means he want to get rid of something that bother him on his skin, it can be parasites, temp, new water, etc.. You alway have to quarantine new fish, some people can get away with it in few time but they will pay latter, bad..rea; bad, later. Quarantene a fish is not cheap and time consuming. I like not to quarantene at all, if you want that, then when you buy fish, ask the owner what they do for quarantene? most of simple pet shop (as i recconize from your fish) do not, they buy from distubutor and sell to you do nothing, salt is not enough (as i see them do) If you buy from special koi shop, which price can 10 time higher they probably do a good quarantene job. However, still have to quarantene your fish, since 2 fish have been together couple days, chance of transmitting parasite is already occur, you as well quarantene both, and your gold fish too, seem like we get into big trouble here, since Suppavern will kill gold fish. Hopefully you do not have Fluke then we can get away with just Proform C or Quickcure. For procedure of quarantene, please check this website: sacramentokoi.com, i found that is the most effective with the cost. Be cool and keep learning, there is a lot more to come.
