salt dip for new fish, is it recomended? Can't Post

Dear Sifu,
I wonder if a new fish after go through proper quarantine procedure and before we put it into our pond to mix with our old fish, is it recomended to do salt dip with concentration (2.2%) for about 10 minute? I was adviced by one of my local koi dealer, that they said they always do that to avoid old fish being contaminated with new fish. Any experience or comment pls welcome.Crazy

You know it's addicted and cost you a lot of money, but still doing it!

As you know, Viper, Salt depend on concentration, relax fisk and kill bacteria (some) and parasite (two). I know some people have a habit to dip in salt .6% (koivet). Think of it scientificly, if you try to eliminate parasite over quarantine, then the chemical of the quarantine process will do them job, not need to the help of salt. If you try to kill bacteria, then bacteria exist in all water, kill now, it grow later in new water. If you try to relax the fish, then 2.2% probably will kill the fish. Do your own judment.

true , the newly fish just arrive, particular by air, all are very stress, it need to be relax and rebuilt their slime. .3% salt in couple days in QT tank will help.
Put in medication after seeing some thing wrong is dangerous. I have some koi when i first start doing that way. Most of the time is too late or koi will be injured and weaken by desease. other healthy koi in QT will all be affected.
Most dealer have salt about a day or two then apply chemical.

Dear viper99

So many people have differing ideas about Quarentine. So i'll tell you about mine for which i have not had a problem in my main pond for over 10 years now.

My quarentine pond is 3000 litres it's also my spawning and rearing pond if i buy a new fish it's bagged and floated in this for about 30 minutes then after adding water into the bag a few times during this period it is released i would put in a couple of sacroficle fish as roomys. It is filtered and it has a heater also. I alway quarentine new fish for 8 weeks raising the temp to 23 degrees C over the first 4 weeks very slowly and then allow the temp to drop back to the tempriture of the main pond.

If any problems occure i can treat in situ knowing exacley how much water to treat. If any more fish are purchased during this time then the prosses must start again. Once the fish have been quarentines for a minumum of 8 weeks i will catch these fish and introduce them to the main pond.

As i say i have not had any problems for a long time now. I'm sure if you wanted you could do the same thing on a smaller scale. Quarentine is Essentual if you value your fish and very very costly if you don't quaentine them.

Thanks Zoul for the advice. I always quarantine my newly bought fish for minimum 2 weeks, but sometime some trouble still happen after addition of new fish. Nothing serious, but sometime several fishes are flashing. So I wonder if I should put salt to the pond after adding new fish while my local dealer advice me to do salt dip instead. I guest my quarantine time is not enough especially when I see yours for 8 weeks.Crazy

Dear viper99

Personaly i would not salt the main pond becouse quite a few nasties are now getting reistant to low levels of salt such as white spot.

So i would increase your quarentine time. If your having space problems use an old bath tub or a large water butt or even a kids padding pool with a net over it. You could have a couple of cheap koi or even a couple of gold fish in all year round.

Worste case would be to buy a nice koi put it in your pond and then in a couple of weeks finding all your expencive well loved floating on top with some nasty khv or something.

Never underestimate the get rich quick by selling as many koi as possible section of many garden centers and traders out their. Don't trust anyone who sells you a fish consider them all to be infected and your main pond to be clean. The fish you buy need to be perfect before adding them to your pond.

Once i brought about 14 fish and had them all in quarentine they all seemed healthy and then a freind said i should see this garden center that had some nice fish, so i did. I noticed that all the tanks were connected to the same filter they had japanese koi malaysion and israeli koi as well as gold fish tench rudd fresh water swan musscles channel cat fish ect. So i purchased 1 jap koi took it home and put it in the quarentine tank, 3 days later all the 14 fish i brought where dead. Over a gran worth of fish and the only one left alive was the last one i brought it died 4 days after that.

So be careful where you buy. If i had stuck that fish in my main pond it would have cost me over 20 grand. instead of just the one.

take note:

Do not add salt if you are using zeolite as the salt will discharge the ammonia already taken up by the zeolite, in effect your ammonia will go higher.

Just use a submersible pump with overhead filter with filter foam a basin or platic container if no quarantine tank available a little rock salt then net it because it might jump.

Thats why quarantine is an SOP it should be a standard operating proceedure but its really up to you if you want a headache.

I know when we bought a new fish we are very eager to put it in the main pond I learn it from mistake and lost the stock. Now do 6 weeks in quarantine just to make sure then enjoy it with the rest of the stock. When I started I still don't have internet and have nobody to ask for help we got very few petshop around. I got lot of mistake and nobody's perfect anyway hehehe.

good luck happy koi keeping everyone.
