Adding a variety of foods to diet Can't Post

Hello all:

I now have 8 beautiful koi in my 6000 gallon pond. I am feeding them Hikari Gold food in the am and pm and want o provide them with a wider variety. They did not take to the spinach I tried and have heard that they enjoy orange slices (weekly), lettuce, peas and even pieces of shrimp. I have not tried anything but spinach thus far and wanted to check in with the experts before introducing something new. I would appreciate members sharing feeding regiments so that my fish continue to grow healthy and vibrant.

I sure appreciate your feedback!

If you want your Koi fish to have reddish or pinkish shade, feed them with foods rich in carotene. However, if you want for them to have multiple colors, feed them with a type of algae called “spirulina”. Spirulina brings out the red patches in its body without disrupting the other coloring pigments. In simple terms, the colors of the Koi fish depend on what type of food the Koi fish is fed. Remember, it is recommended that you feed your Koi fish with the guaranteed Koi fish food.

Hand feeding your Koi fish with tiny worms and prawn will eventually tame them. Also, Koi fish likes to eat fresh lettuces. Be advice, you should and must not “overfeed” your pet fish because overfeeding will make them produce more wastes. Koi wastes contain ammonia, a substance that can pollute its water. That is why you must always clean its habitat.

Hi Dave,
I had tried adding Barley Green to my koi pellets recently.
It produced good results and I am quite satisfied with it.
You can read more here: http://nskoi.com/vitamins.html.

Cheers!

your fishes must be fussy huh... or they are not hungry
i cut the orange into 4 slice and throw it to the pond.
experiment and see what they like .. dont put a lot coz it will
make your pond dirty.. try small pieces first ...

adios
