Feeding Koi Indoors for the winter

I brought my 3 koi (12") indoors for the winter and they are in my basement in a 500 gallon show tank that is both filtered and aerated. I had been feeding them every other day with low waste pellets (enough that they could eat in 5 min). I'm not sure if it was as a result of my aeration tip plugging up or overfeeding, but my water quality turned and I had both Nitrates and Nitrites and had to do a large water change to get the water back in check. I was wondering how much I should be feeding, and how often, given they are in a smaller tank rather than my pond. I used pond water and the same filter from the pond when I started the tank, so the biological filter was in tact. It was ok for about 2.5 months, but ended up spending xmas eve getting the tank back in order. They seem to be much better now, they were lethargic until I did the water change and got the aerator workign again. I just don't want it to happen again. Cheers, Jeff
