How many time per day? Can't Post

Hi,

Anyone know that how many time per day we can feed our koi? I use automatic feeder. Not so sure that how long do koi digest in one cycle?

Cheers,

Re: [Tao BKK] How many time per day? [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Tao,

I feed my kois 3 times a day at 8:30am, 12:30pm and 5:00pm. It takes them about 15-20 mins to finish each meal. However, I've read Sakai of Hiroshima feed their kois at least 4 times a day... 5 times if it's a wet season.

From my observations, my kois tend to be less active soon after feeding and continue so for about 2-3 hours. At the most 3 hours after the last meal, they will be swimming about near the surface sucking at the algae. So, I would guess the feed cycle is about once in 3 hours.

Rgds,
Dennis

Hi Tao & Dennis,

I feed mine 4 to 5 times a day during summer months and maybe once or twice (depends on water temp) in winter just to check them for any visible parasites. Food is always consumed within 10mins. I'm to feeding them less but more times per day so they don't have to fight for their foodSmile I'm also using my wifes' measuringLaugh cup just to make sure I'm giving them same amount of food everyday.Cool

rgds,
Jon

From what I understand , if you use auto feeders the koi will adjust on their own after a while and do not overeat. I need to get me one because they way I feed the koi go crazy at feeding time because i dont feed enough small amount throughout the day. This is what I here anyways about koi feeder, they say that at first they overeat and then they eat small amount all through the day using the feeder, sounds like the koi have it right.

Hi Dennis, Koi38 and Koifishgirl,

Thank you for your reply. Dennis observation is make sense to me. Last weekend, I calculate the amount feed and weight the food from auto feeder. I found that I under fed them for about 4 months. From the calculation, only 0.05% of the total fish weight! Wow! It looked like keeping them in the glass house (during winter time in Japan) but the temp is around 30 deg.C!!! Therefore, I start increasing feeding everyday since last Sunday. Now it is close to 2%. Will see what happen within 1 large bag of SAKI color enhancement! Do anybody try at 3%. Note that 50% fish is nisai: 40% is sansai and yonsai. 10% is Tosai. Total of 20 pieces in 33 tons pond! Very difficult to reduce to 12 (to save cost of feeding).

Hi Tao,

I can only estimate how much my kois weigh in total, but I'm very sure the 70cm "torpedo" Rose is by far the heaviest Wink. Their sizes are as follow:

70cm x 3
65cm x 1
60cm x 3
55cm x 1
50cm x 2
40cm x 1

I would guess not too far in excess of 20kg in total. I have calculated my total feed weight per day to be about 200g, so I guess that's about 1% of body weight per day.

Dennis

Hi Dennis,

Try this formular for weight calculation. I got it from www.coloradokoi.com. It is a lot easier than user the diagram.

weight, kg = (length, cm)^3/57.7/1000

Hi Tao,

Thanks for the pointer. However I think the formula can only be a rough guide in calculating kois' weight. I've a Maruboshi "the monk" Showa and Sakai "torpedo" Rose both at 70cm and I'm pretty sure the "torpedo" weighs more by quite a margin Wink.

Dennis
