Jumbo sized koi Can't Post

Hi

If a koi comes from jumbo parents but in it's first few years is only fed a limited amount, which reduces it's growth. But then if feeding is increased can the koi still obtain jumbo size?

Thx

Re: [Gouri] Jumbo sized koi [In reply to] Can't Post

Dear Gouri

A few factors are involved here. It's not just diet, the enviromental factors are immplyed.

If a fish is kept in a large pond with limited food given it could still reach a large size, becouse of all the other protentual food that just drops in...

On the other hand if the fish is kept in a smallish tank inside a house and fed a really good diet it might not grow becouse of the limited space...

If a koi is kept in a crampt space and then given a large pond it growth rate will speed up for an amount of time.

Personaly i would go for a big pond and a good diet just to get the best of my fish..... but i don't like to mess about with my fish

Hi,

If your koi hasn't reach 70cm and above as a sansai, chances of it becoming a jumbo (>80cm) is quite slim. For koi with jumbo genes, the trick is to maximise its growth during the 1st 3 years as it'll slow quite dramatically by the 4th year.

Hi kit,

I'm not too sure about koi compromising their skin quality during periods of fast growth, but their colours do fade a little (especially the hi) when the scales extend at the outer rim during these period. Skin quality is more dependent on genetic factors, water condition and food. That's the reason I feed young kois Spirulina (Hikari Excel)... with moderation (only in the morning mixed with Hikari Hi-Growth, 2:1 to Excel)... not to heighten their colour but maintain their skin quality and prevent the hi from toning down too much during growth spurt.

I take the road where growth comes 1st, trying not to compromise too much on the colour during this stage. When growth slows down on the 4th year, the koi will have more than enough time for you to start finishing its colour.

70cm for a nissai is quite incredible Shocked. I'll say if a koi can reach 70cm and above as a sansai, it has good chance to be a jumbo before its 6th year Smile.

Me no cifu lah Blush... just sharing my wee bit of experience here.

Cheers,
Dennis

Sifu Dennis,

I read that you feed "young kois Spirulina (Hikari Excel)... with moderation (only in the morning mixed with Hikari Hi-Growth, 2:1 to Excel)". I was wondering how young are these Koi because the average Koi size I got are 3inchs. And if I do the same ratio of mixture of food, is it ok?

Hi Mango,

I don't buy koi smaller than 10 inches... I'm not skilled in reading koi any smaller than 10 inches lah BlushTongue.

The last time I've bought a tosai is a 10 inches Sekiguchi showa... can hardly see it when I put it together with the rest of my koi in the pond Crazy.

I believe the ratio is fine for very young koi like yours... just make sure you've got the right pellet size as there's no way a 3 inches koi can feed on Hikari Hi-Growth Wink

Cheers,
Dennis

Re: [zoul] Jumbo sized koi [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm just curious with the pond size. I currently have 3100 gallons (including Filtration System) pond with depth ranging from 2.1M - 2.2M.
what are the chances of me getting a jumbo size KOI? Because I have just bought a Japan imported Kohaku (73cm) - 6 years old and I am trying
to maximize its growth so that it can reach 80 or even 90 cm.

The problem is that although I have deep pond, but the total area is so small that my Kohaku seems to get easily bored and just rest in the bottom
of my pond. BTW I live in Indonesia where the weather is always above 26 Celcius and I therefore feed my KOI 4-6times a day.

I currently have 6 KOI with the smallest being 55cm. Is this good enough to grew a jumbo size KOI? Should I get my KOI a better food like yours (Hikari - Hi growth and color)?

Does anyone have recipes for obtaining a fat and bulky KOI (usually for contest purposes)?

I'm sorry if I have ask so many questions. It's just that I am a novice who really want to get a jumbo size KOI.

Thank you

I cant remember where i optianed this, but someone told me that fish use some kinda cimical to tell how much growing room they have. So he told me to Do water changed to Speed up the growing prosses. Is this true?

Dear MakubeXXX

If your fish is just lying at the bottom of the pond i would say its unwell. Check your water peramitors. If you keep on top of the water quality and work hard on keeping all the things as close to perfect as possible, your fish should have no problems.

I hope you quarentined your fish before putting it in the pond.

If you have optomum conditions good filteration and not to many fish, with a balanced and varied diet. Things should be fine.

Your pond depth is good but lacks the overall dimension for a koi to extend itself physically. Depth is good for building and maintaining body mass but overall conformation and body strength may be compromised by a lack of swimming space.

With regards to your kohaku, don't bet on it reaching 80cm. For a koi to have a shot at 80cm, it needs to surpass 70cm before its 4th year.

Dennis

I helped a friend harvest some 1 and 1/2 year old kois from the mud ponds. the bigs ones were above 55 cm and they came out long and slim.
The kois were checked and quarantined for any problems. after that, they will be placed in a normal 60 ton concrete pond to be fattened up. When they achieve the ideal body shape, back into the mud pond they go for more another 4 months for more length. and the cycle continues.

from my observation, very few kois reach the super jumbo status. its like people, not every tall parents produce a yao ming.

am happy if they reach 72 cm with a nice body

Hi Lar,

Would you mind sharing with us the varieties of koi's food which was fed to fatten up the koi and
how many times of feeding per day while being placed in the 60 ton concrete pond. Thank you.

there are several mud ponds. Some are 25 sqm, some are 50 sqm. some are even bigger. the depth is usually 7 to 10 feet. its aerated.

Most of the growers here use aquaculture feeds high in animal protien, 45%. they are fed 3% of body weight spread over 4 feeding. 8 am, 11am, 2 pm, 5 pm.

Hi Koiluv,

Based on our experience, it takes a month or so to fatten it up, it really depends on the individual koi. there are some 2 year old kois that reach 60 out of the mudpond, some the usual minimum 40 plus cm
