Koi Food Question Can't Post

I am looking for some advice on koi food. This is my first spring with four koi I purchased about 9 months ago. I just started feeding them a high carbohydrate diet after a very long winter here in the Pacific Northwest. The weather is warming up a little and I wanted to start them on a new diet that coincides with the increase in temperature. My primary focus is, of course, health. I also want a product that will help spur growth and enhance color. I am attracted to the Hikari product line and am curious about what products you recommend. I was thinking of mixing the standard GOLD brand with a color enhancer (spirulina). Am I on he right track?

I appreciate your advice and recommendations.

Dear sansebbastian

A raried diet is good. A little of everything. You might if you can find a safe source concider live foods, such as daphnia blood worm and fresh water shrimp or glass shrimp.

Try also worms normal garden ones are good.

The Daohnia bloodworms and glass shrimp live in cold water and if they don't get eaten they won't pollute the water.

Koi Lover,

Thanks for the tip. Providing a varied diet seems like the way to go. I would like to use the Hikari Gold and Hi Growth as a staple and mix in live food, bread, lettuce and other varieties periodically. Hopefully this will result in healthy and beautifully colored koi.

Thanks again for your help!

Dennis,

Sorry for getting back to you so late. The water temperature right now is between 55 and 65 depending upon the time of day and the weather. How does temperature effect feeding needs?

I appreciate your help!

Dear sansebastian

The temp affect Koi by there metobolic rate increasing and decreasing with the water temp. As they are cold blooded animals cold wheather slows it down warm and hot wheather increases it.

Oh by the way those daphnia that i mentioned earlier, are like 50% protein.

Thanks for the tip on Daphina. I'll try to cultivate some in a 5 gallon bucket. I've also heard that earthworms are good food as well as some vegetables like lettuce and fruits like watermelon.

Hi sansebastian,

Sorry for the late reply... my internet service was down the last 2 days PirateCrazy.

Zoul is right. Kois are cold blooded animals and they cannot regulate their body temperature like mammals. As such, their metabolic rate and digestive capability is determined by the temperature of their surrounding.

At the current water temperature, it is not suitable to feed high protein diet to your koi as they would not be able to absorb it and as a result will pollute your water. Try feeding wheatgerm based diet for the time being. Between 65-75 degree fahrenheit you can slowly start introducing growth diet. Between 75-80 degree fahrenheit, koi's digestive system is at their best and they respond very well to growth diet.

Cheers,
Dennis
