Koi extremely nervous when I feed them Can't Post

Hi all,

I've facing a small problem when feeding my kois recently. They have just recently become very nervous each time I feed them. My kois will approach the pellets with caution. Then, one of them will take a bite, and then *whoosh*, they'll dive to the bottom of the pond, causing a big splash. They were never like this until recently. My theory is that they're learning this bad habit from one of my locally-bred kois (i.e. a wannabe kohaku). Would removing my locally bred koi solve this problem? Such nervous behaviour among my koi has taken some enjoyment of the hobby away from me :( I think my water quality is fine and my pond is not overcrowed. I have a 25 ton pond with 20 koi.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

The kois must have been spooked by something and are nervous. However such behviour is compunded by a spooky koi and if you can identify the fella and if you can give it away, do it. It hapens to mine too. It will take a while to gain their confidence. Trying starving them for a week and then start to reintroduce food in your presence. I usually agitate the water with my hand and then relese some food in the water. This way they associate the splhes and your presence with food. DO it at the same place and same time. Good Luck!Wink

Hi Hwong,

Thanks for your reply. My kois are not shy anymore. I managed to improve the water quality by cleaning the bottom drain and filter chambers. They're back to their normal friendly self again! Have a good weekend!
