most matured bio-filter would be able to totally reduce nitrites to nitrates. most pond without a trickle tower would experience a nitrate hike once in a while, but nitrate is is less harmful to kois than ammonia and nitrites. u see a standard bio-filter - (maybe u could tell what ur using as media) does well in reducing poop to nitrites, but nitrates are the ones fertiliseing the weed and algae. if it grows along pond walls and floors, and seems manageable, then it should be fine. but u could have a bigger problem with blanket weed. a bog filter/plant filter is good, at least u could get a different kind of garden with water plants. but plants alone is not enough unless u have A LOT, well god knows how much. plants will only suck nitrate only to the amount they need for their growth. but its still good to have plants. trickle tower and uv light seems the best in keeping algae down
