Koi feeding vs algee development! Can't Post

Have a small Koi Pond(2000/2500 gal). Pond receives some morning sun...and that area develops algee... Question!!... Should I feed such that the Koi will keep the algee in check.. that is, feed pellets in an amount that the algee is a must for them to eat???

Have seen pics of 1/2 an orange as a treat... dumb question but how do you cut the orange such that the cut side/flat side is exposed to the fish ... ????
Thanks..
Jim

wow, ive never actually even thought that would be able to be calculated!! ur going a bot too far, feeding less is not the real solution here. your kois wont grow as you would like, plus i dont think it is possible to figure out!!!!!!

the root of the problem here is nitrates. a lot would agree trickle tower is best to solve nitrate thus algae problem. or you could just cover the top of your pond from sunlight, a little diy could save cost. buying weed killer is just not economical.

and i dont think kois eat algae as much as anyone would like to think. there was a thinking that algae contains spirulina thus it is good for colour of koi, but in japan to develop colour more emphasis is given to soil quality and type of water (hard or soft water) rather than type of food. food to enhance colour is given towards competition time.

But...no nitrate problems!!!.... test show little to none!!!!... but I'm in a very tropical area of the US... Florida.... and the algee is growing...and doen't appear that the Koi could care less!!!!

So, ur saying that algee is a result of Nitarates??... there are some but not heavy!!!
Bio-filter seems to be working fine.... and there is a small water fall from one pond to the next....to add air to the water....Have NO plants...working on that now and this summer!!!

most matured bio-filter would be able to totally reduce nitrites to nitrates. most pond without a trickle tower would experience a nitrate hike once in a while, but nitrate is is less harmful to kois than ammonia and nitrites. u see a standard bio-filter - (maybe u could tell what ur using as media) does well in reducing poop to nitrites, but nitrates are the ones fertiliseing the weed and algae. if it grows along pond walls and floors, and seems manageable, then it should be fine. but u could have a bigger problem with blanket weed.

a bog filter/plant filter is good, at least u could get a different kind of garden with water plants. but plants alone is not enough unless u have A LOT, well god knows how much. plants will only suck nitrate only to the amount they need for their growth. but its still good to have plants. trickle tower and uv light seems the best in keeping algae down

The Bio-Ball filter is an old Dianogious Earth swimming pool filter(would say the bottom would hold about 15/20 gals of water) with all the insides taken out and replaced with small round plastic bio-balls.. that is, to the brim of the bottom of the filter.
I test the water with an ammonia test kit..(2 bottles, 8 drops each) and match the color on the provided color card... Todate, I have never seen the PPM above .25PPM...I do a 100 gals off added water about every 2 weeks and remove 300 gals about every 4/5 weeks...The test card says it test for NH3/NH4 Ammonia....Koi seem to be doing well... after introducing them to the pond 12/28/07... They are a bit shy...STILL!!!Just the algee problem in the section of the pond that receives sun about 3 hours/day... concerned about later this summer... when it will recieve 5/6 hours of sun each day...
