Koi not being fed... Can't Post

Hi everyone!

I am currently working for a hospital and there is an out door koi pond. I was talking with the maintenance person that cares for the pond, and she told me that she doesn't feed the fish. I told her that they probably need to eat, and she replied that they eat the algae(Keep in mind that I am in Phx, AZ and the water never drops below 60 F. even in the winter). She aparently never feeds them even when the water is in the high 70's. She is very stubborn, and set in her ways when it comes to taking care of the pond. I told her that I would supply food for the fish out of my own pocket, and her response was "No. If we feed them then the filters will get dirty. Have you ever tried to clean a pond filter?". This makes me so upset that I am going to go to her supervisor and explain my case. I feel the fish are being neglected. I don't know much abut koi so I decided to ask the wonderful people at this forum. I also fear that she isn't changing the water often enough.

I guess what I need are maybe some good links to some pages that have reputable info on koi nutrition, and maybe why it isn't a good idea to assume that algae alone will sustain them. Also I would like any opinions everyone here is willing to offer! Who knows, maybe I'm way off, and this is a common practice.

Thanks in advance, and cool site!

Re: [dalton] Koi not being fed... [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello, well, as a Koi breeder and keeper, I am pissed ! Alge is fine, but thats not all they need, they probily eat some bugs , flies, ect! There is a difference to SURVIVE and THRIVE!!! There is a reason we have filters! That is to filter!!! If the filters are done RIGHT, there is very little cleaning! And once a day a handful of koi pellets will not cause any EXTRA cleaning! If this person doesnt want to clean the pond, then maybe she should change jobs! I wonder what her house looks like if cleaning a filter is too much!!! Please let the hospital know of this situation, care should not only be given to humans, but all living beings! And in worst case, just buy the food, ( pellets) and when this ( lady) is not around then toss a handful of pellets in! And if this lady has a problem with this, then she will just have to stand gaurd in front of the pond all day!! That should get her FIRED fast!!! And in fact let other people know how pretty koi are and give them food for the koi too! Maybe present an adoption plan, to where your co workers can adopt a koi and name it ect!!Thanks for writing!!!
