Dear UK Mick

I've used medi-koi before, you should only feed this stuff for 3 weeks, with 2 week break as it contains natural antibiotics. Thing is bugs build up a resiliance to anti-biotics.

Youve heard of MRSA before ?

Hi UK Mick,

I've been thinking of trying Medicarp as well as friends who use it say it's excellent. It seems very popular at koi shows, even outselling Hikari. It's rated as one of the best allround koi foods and for a quality food isn't too pricey. Many people can confuse the name with other foods that sound similar like Medikoi from NT Labs and Medi-koi from Aqua Meds(a health food with 4 antibiotics so only for sick fish). There's even a Medekoi but this turns out to be a German koi site :) Starting to confuse myself now!

Medicarp is the only commercial fish food to contain Lactoferrin which is an amazing protein from milk that has antimicrobial properties. Tests have been done on farmed fish with excellent results as it strengthens their immune system and increases mucus production. Do a search on the web for Lactoferrin and you will see that even we can take it for health benefits. All the other ingredients look good to so would give it a go.

I'm currently feeding mine on Kusuri which is great but can be a little hard and need soaking for a bit. I might mix brands to get the benefits of both.
Medi-koi Health looks very good for poorly fish so I may try that on my fish in quarantine. Hope this helps.

Re: [UK Mick] MediCarp..? [In reply to] Can't Post

Having had a summer of problems with loss of appetite, parasites and gasping, last week I bought some Medicarp.

I couldnt find it any where other than ebay and then paid a small fortune for it.

1st day, the fish ignored it.
2nd day, they nibbled a little
3 rd day, they ate it all
4th day, they were waving their fins and shouting"over here please"

Seriously, I am amazed!

They have more life than ive seen in a long time, all fish are at the top swarming/looking for food. Even the shy one is hanging around at the surface prior to feed time.

I do have some questions for other members though......

1. Should I only use for a few weeks?
2. Do I need to be carefull about overfeeding? (I have found myself adding a bit extra because they are so hungry)

I also could do with a bit more info on this.

Many Thanks

Hi MissIKnowItAll,

Medicarp can be fed regularly as a daily food but note it has health giving ingredients, not medicated to cure diseases or fix problems like parasites and gasping alone. It's great to hear that your koi are doing well on it, others have given similar praise but I've yet to try it. Most of the specialist dealers in the UK stock it and on the internet so it should be available but like other good foods from Japan it is quite expensive £50 for a 5kg bag.

I tend to mix brands as koi can become a bit fussy and add some high protein food during the summer for growth. If your koi are hungry it's a good sign but stick to the rule that they finish everything in 10 minutes. Check the water quality to make sure the filter can cope with increase feeding. It's better to be cautious than to overfeed but you probably know this already.

All the best.Smile
