Hey kortana the pro you talking about I wonder what the kois feed on to make them survive. I know theres algae and sometimes bugs but their not enogh for not feeding the koi. I wonder how they do it??? Carps in little lakes and and ponds I wonder how they survive in the wild??? Well, if you cut open the stomach of a wild carp you will find - algae, algal associated minerals, crutaceams. insects, worms, and "mud". Remember that naturally they live in mudponds and sift through the silt all day. You'd be suprised how much organic life there actually is in the water, easily enough to support fish But you do raise a point, that in the wild stocking densities are far lower than in our ponds so there is the issue of whether or not the pond can support the life inside it. If you have one of the more "minimalist" ponds where its basically just the koi, there wont be as much as if you had many plants (which reminds me, koi will eat plants!) rocks etc. Thus if you didnt want the fish to be completely dependant on you it would presumably be possible to not feed them in certain situations, but I would still suggest supplementing their diet with artificial foods.
