Sakai Fish Farm Food Can't Post

Has anyone tried the Sakai Koi Food? Any good results? Currently using saki hikari. Should I stick to saki hikari?

Deen, I used to feed my koi with Saki Hikari high-growth, the food is good but it is very oily and I used that for almost two years. Half a year ago, I switched to Momotaro food.. and the water is not oily and I noticed the growth in koi over the few months more significantly than my two years with Saki Hakari. However, I will go back to the Saki Hakari for their colour food once every four months or so. I will do a 20kg bag of colour food during that period... and once finished, I will go back to the Momotaro food.

I buy the 15 kg Momotaro food as it is cheaper than the smaller packs. I keep them in plastic container and usually last about four weeks. I wanted to try Sakai food but couldn't get them in the bigger pack and hence, didn't try. But I heard that the Sakai food is good but pricey.

Deen, this is taken from MAX website and the food that he carries including the prices ... http://maxkoifarm.com/web/Food.htm ... the one I use is the one called "built up". Not sure if you can get it in Malaysia maybe Kepong as they are also a listed Momotaro agent. You can compare prices from here too.

i am currently using the saki hikari hi growth. as you said the water becomes oily from the amino acids & fats. now i also use the Kusuri Hi growth diet (the powdered one where you have to add some water & mix it till it become like a dough). Very high protein content (66%). Feed them that 4 times a week. People say it fouls up the water thats why I don't use it as much. I dont use color foods, my fishes are mostly tosais entering nissai. I want to focus on their growth first. Saki Color any good?

The momotaro food sounds interesting, esp the momotaro white part. Is it for improving the fishes' shiroji? that'd be awesome.

I heard a few people say that Sakai food is the best in the market also the most expensive one. Just wanted to make sure, just in case it a marketing hype or whatever.

Sakai food is one of the best... but unforutnately, also the price. I have friends who used it and encouraged it. If it is tosai, you should go ahead. Reason for me not to go for Sakai is the cost.. as I used up 20kg in a month. If I use Sakai food, that would cost me about S$300 to $350 a month.

However, the food is only one factor, the water quality is equally, if not more important. So, the results varies. Yes, the power dough-like food is troublesome and foul up water if not consumed. The best power food would be Izeki but again, it is trouble and the Sakai or Momotaro food is just as good if not better.

Colour food should be given once you hit nissan - once in a while. Three or Four bags of growth food followed by one bag of colour may be enough in your case. It will help the fish not to lose it colour too quickly while it grows..

hmm i shall look for it then. no idea which dealers supplies sakai food in KL. Yeah now I only feed my kois with growth food. i like to vary their diets too. i give them diced boiled prawns. sometimes soak their food with propolis.

still tinkering with a feeding program. i read that breeders dont feed their tategois with color food until they're nissai about to reach sansai. another article i read states that feed spirulina to children can stunt their growth. maybe same can be said about kois?

now nitrate level quite high, pond vacuum's not working. stess stress cannot change water.

Hi Deen,

I think most of the Koi dealers in KL do not sell the Sakai food products becos' of the high cost and
poor demand. The only dealer who may still import the product is Wong Koi Centre in Ipoh.

BTW, where did you purchase the Propolis Health product? Is the content filled into a small black plastic
bottle? I wanted to get a bottle to try it out as well. Thank you.

You are right about feeding colour food to tosai.. usually nissai. Also, nitrate is hard to remove... by vegetation or trickle tower... (you can read the thread on trickle tower and can make one yourself... pretty interesting... lots and lots of pictures and pages of TT in this forum).

Water,
You must have a lot of koi in your pond. 15kg consumption for a month is a lot of koi food! Cool
How good is the "built up"? what have been improved?

I have not tried saki hikari before and wonder how good it is. I feed momotaro and sakai koi food on wheatgerm only. I stay away from colour food as it is not giving me balance colour between white and red. how about yours? Good red and white after feeding Saki hikari colour. if it is good, I may try. Sly

I don't have a lot of koi in my pond - which is about 50tons (measures about 22 ft x 14ft x 7 ft deep) - but they are big kois.. 70 to 90 cm range and about 15 of them. I still have three fishes at the koi farm and probably will bring them back later. I intend to reduce to 10 or 12 kois in my 50 tons pond. I use an autofeeder which feeds up to ten times a day but small quantities each time. You can set the timing of feed and I tried that and set it to 10 secs per feed. That way, the loading on the filter is spread out... and there is time for the filter to manage its nitrification process with a smaller load each time.

I noticed that jumbo koi grows fast and the colour stretches out...(once it gets beyond about 60cm and for Sakai, Momotaro fishes, they grow very quickly... also with my feeding regime).... no doubt, the colour will return if the bloodline is good... but just didn't want to risk colour fading too quickly... i feed colour food once after every three to four bags of Built-up. If your kois are growing quickly in a big pond, you need to maintain the colour. Sometimes, after 15kg of colour food, the shiro does take on a little bit of yellow but it would be gone once I switched back to the normal feed. However, I found out that the whiteness of the shiro is also very much dependent on bloodline, quality of fish as well as quality of water and the dissolved oxygen level. Also, recent years have seen so much changes in the bloodline development, nissai kois can now reach up to 70cm and beyond with some tosai getting a high 40cm and some rare ones going up to 50cm. This rapid growth, I believe, will cause the hi to stretch a lot more... and I am not taking chances .... so, a cycle of colour food is precaution to hopefully, keep the hi intact in their growth process

I bought the propolis in liquid form, in small dark glass bottle with a dripper. It can be easily found at any health food store shop. Just a warning, propolis is expensive. Now looking for one in a spray format.

Did any of you guys had a chance to talk with the japanese guy behind the FD food counter... this company produces the FD builtup and have introduced three more product range... one color, one quick growth and one supplement for digestion, liver or something. Incidentally, they also claim that this company makes the food for Momotaro as well as Dianichi.....

The store was besides MAX as their food are sold through MAX here in Singapore. I have used their FD for the past almost one year now... it is not bad and I prefer this to Seki Hakari.... but not sure in comparison to Sakai but Sakai is pricey. Saw one food at MAX at the show... KOI KING.. seems like from China or wat...

Anyone visited and pay any attention to the FOOD... I know everyone was engrossed with their faces lowered inside the tank or vet and all eyes are on koi... ???

Also Summer was giving 25% discount on their food... and I bought 5 kg of Hi-Silk food and a bag (2kg) of Silkworm for S$120 total.

water,

yes i did visited the FD booth, they mentioned the things you said. There were a lot of koi-related products there. Felt like buying the Sakai Food, Silk Pupae but alas, luggage too small. Sigh.

But the one thing that really impressed me was this booth selling carbon-fibre looking trickle tower/ protein skimmer. A good substitute for the noisy bakki showers.

Guys,

Got a pack of the highly lauded FD Primo Plus... will see how it compares to Hikari Hi-Growth.

FYI, Atari is bringing in Sakai koi food in 20kg bulk packs. They have plans to repack it into 4kg vaccuum bags as per Sakai offered so that cost can be lowered compared to original Sakai 4kg packaging. Will update in this thread when it arrives.

Cheers,
Dennis

I mis-stated. It is this FD food and not momotaro. But FD claimed that they make both Dainichi and Momotaro food... they didn't say that the food are identical but that they are the manufacturer for food marketed under both these renowned koi farm names.

Deen, don't think the carbon fibre looking tower is a direct replacement of the bakki. This looks more like a TT coupled with a protein skimmer or foam fractioner ... so, would be effective in removing nitrate and DOC. The Bakki claimed to be a complete filter and the BH is said to have properties to perform the nitrification process... Don't think they are in direct competition.

But I agree with you that that thing actually looks good when compared to the Bakki shower which can be quite hard to hide.... by the way, do you know how much is this ??

yeah water, its easier to hide & doesn't make much noise. having a bakki shower makes your house sound like its raining heavily all the time.

when I checked that booth the other day there was a 'special discount' for the trickle tower thing. it costs SGD2,800 for a mid-sized one. I think I kept their business card but can't seem to find it.

there's a company in Singapore supplying it.

Believe the company bringing this in is Zion Koi and I know them. But SGD 2800 for a trickle tower with a foam fractitioner is not cheap at all... Agree on the sound of the Bakki shower ...

Hi Davkoi,

Sorry for the late reply.

I bought it at the Asia Cup koi show in Singapore... don't think it's available in Malaysia. If my memory serves me right, I think it's about S$90+ for Primo Plus and S$70+ for Build-Up Extra.

Kenny of FD Food said Primo Plus is primarily formulated to bulk up koi in a short time for show. The result is supposedly fast but the koi will fall back to its original frame when the diet is stopped for 2 weeks (if I remember correctly). Build-Up Extra will take a longer time to show its result, but the effect is supposedly permanent.

Cheers,
Dennis

Hi Davkoi,

I've got the 3kg pack. It's also available in 15kg floating pellets or 20kg sinking pellets bulk packs. The various pellet sizes are S (3.5mm), M (5.7mm) and L (6.7mm).

I think it's the same koi food as posted on Max's website. I may have Kenny's namecard... will post his contact info when I find it.

Cheers,
Dennis
