Started feeding with Hikari Spirulina Can't Post

Hello everybody,
I have 4 koi's, 2 orange and 2 golden-colored with black spots.

The 2 orange-colored are each abt 6-inch long.

The 2 golden-colored are each abt 4-inch long.

I have just started feeding them with Hikari Spirulina and normal pellets, mixed. Feeding about 3 times a day on weekends, and 2 times a day on normal workdays.

How long will it be before I will be able to see their colors start enhancing and the sizes start growing please ? How is the growth rate like ?

Thank you.

Re: [Roxanne] Started feeding with Hikari Spirulina [In reply to] Can't Post

Roxanne,

Im using Hikari Staple and Hikari Spirulina as a mix for my koi during 16*C and up Tempretures. I have noticed the Hi on my Kohaku and the Sumi of my other koi have been very intense. But, IMHO its all to do with genetics...due to the fact the bloodlines of my Kohaku/Showas are that the Hi and Sumi are lite when the fish is about 3inchs, but the older it gets the intense the colouration is. The color enhancers so help a bit, but the sunlight and genetics already do the job.

I have found the fix of Staple and Spirulina is a good mix during summer as it increases the intensity of the colors of the koi and they actually grow nice and healthy quite fast. I got some 2inchers in a tank and once I placed them outside with the Hikari foods they grow quite fast.

I have noticed that the dirty heads on my Ogons are improving dramatically once fed with Hikari Foods...I dont know if its the food, but the breeder of my koi feed them Orca QuickGrow Pellets, but once changed they look even better!

To me, give them plenty of swimming space and give them the Hikari mix and im sure they will live on it happly Cool

Dear Roxanne

It's realy hard to say, as you don't notice that much yourself.

Last year i brought myself a small chargoi about 4 inches i quarentined him for a couple of weeks where he put on about an inch he's been in the pond for a year now, and i took the opertunity to measure him when hand feeding him he's now 14 inches long!!!

I never noticed he was getting so big. Some of my freinds come around and say they grow at a stupid pace. I spose being with them most of the time you just don't notice the changes so much.

Hi Mango and Zoul,

Many thanks for your replies.

Both of you are right, and I agree with your points.

I guessed I have to find a way to measure the length from now on, in order to be objective on the development. But I wondered how do we measure the length ?

Secondly, as for the colors, guessed I have to find some friends to come over once-in-awhile to see. They will be able to tell the difference, if there is any.

Hoped I have gotten the proper 'bloodline' (genetics), as for sunlight, there is enough of it where I live.

Mango,

Thank you.

I have one more thing to add : My 6-inchers don't have any black on them, just white and orange. I think the color on the head is turning slowly from orange to red. Will feeding with Hikari food causes any other colors to come up, eg black or blue ?

Sorry, this might be a ridiculous question : but I thought there wouldn't be any harm in asking.

Thanks again,...........

Dear Roxanne

A good deit is always the way to go. But i would erge you not to use just one brand of food, a varied diet i find makes them more intrested.

you might even find they like some stuff more than others.

Frozen bloodworms Dafnia ect are good for their digestion. As most propritey food tend to give fish constipation. You have seen those fish in tanks with a long trail of poo hanging from them ????
Thats constipation, fish have been known to prolapse becouse of it.

If you can find a safe source of dafnia live, all you need is alot of sunlight water and a tub to put them in.

They should be safe after 2 weeks to feed to the fish. If the fish don't eat them all (unlikely) they won't polute your water..

Dear Zoul,

Thank you for your advice. Yes, I have seen what you described, and am aware of giving them a variety of food too.

Do you think any black color would emerge on their bodies though I do not see any black till now (already 6-inch for the orange koi's) ?

Dear Roxanne

It's very hard to say if your koi will develop any sumi (black) on them are you hoping they will or willnot ???

It's not unusual for them, say a kahaku might get a small dot of black on it ... it unlikely to win a prize becouse of that one spot but i always think it make the red show up better. and the white look whiter. but thats just me close to perfection is close enough for me and it all down to the (eye of the beholder )syndrome Wink

Zoul,

I am hoping for some sumi to come up. It looks nicer on my koi's,......... But sad to say, there is not a single dot of sumi both of them now,.......... Will spirulina make the sumi appear ?

Dear Roxanne

I doubt it then, if it's not in their genetic make up it's not gonna happen. You can't change the colour of your eyes by changing your diet.

You might have to get some utsurimono

Dear Zoul,

I'm sorry, but I don't understand : what do you mean by changing the color of the eyes ? I thought we were talking about changing the color of the body of my koi's,........

Secondly : what's utsurimono please ?

Thanks again,.............

Re: [Roxanne] Started feeding with Hikari Spirulina [In reply to] Can't Post

Dear Roxanne

You really are new to this ain't you Wink

Changing to colour of fish is like trying to change your race. If your born African your diet will not make you chinese. If your fish have a lineage of say lemon ogon (a compltley yellow fish) it's parents where lemon ogans and their parents where lemon ogons. the chances are your fish would be a lemon ogon...

Utsurimono is a black fish with a secondary colour such as white red gold lemon ect ect. shiro utsurimono is a black fish with white markings..

Basicley if you whant a fish with a particular patern or colour try and buy one like that.... it's unlikely your gonna change them into what you whant them to be.

Zoul,

Thank you for your reply, and you are right : I am new, however, am very keen to take up this good hobby. If interest is present, there must always be a starting point. This is mine,........ I have 4 koi's which I started looking after since February and April this year.

2 of them have grown by 1 inch, another 2, unsure,.........

Thanks again,........
