belacan powder for koi Can't Post

Hi there

I came across some interesting discussion about belacan for koi, google having picked up on it...

Belacan is a widely used bait additive for the UK carp fishing industry, the mention of belacan powder with chilli got me interested as I'm trying to source a couple of new ingredients for a manufacturing company.

Does anyone know where I can buy BULK belacan powder, with or without chilli?

Will log on again when I've got some more time, there's loads of interesting crossover between observations from the carp fishing trade and your discussion on koi nutrition.

Curiously, a friend and I were feeding his carp (not koi I'm afraid) raw chillis the other week. They have a fascination with them, presumably the smell or taste sensation. Oddly, they seem constant drawn to picking raw chillis up but always seemed to spit them out again, often a long time after first taking them into the mouth.

Chilli powder has been used to great effect as a carp bait additive though.

Anyway, anyone got any ideas on getting hold of belacan powder?

Quite a strange inquiry, if you live in south east asia, esp. Indonesia & Malaysia, you can easily find belacan in the fresh market, or in supermarket, not in powder but in "dried paste" and you can easily use a blender to make it into powder,in Indonesia they called it terasi, there is a similar type of product in east Java, called Petis. Hope this help.

I will not feed them with those, but please go ahead with the experiment, if at the end you come-up with some good result like the Koi grow 10cm per month or the color change from Red to Green, pls let us know, I'll start feeding them with belacan also CoolCoolCool

Actually until now I still do not understand "what is so interesting about Belacan?", becuase it is make of shrimp?

If belacan is purely made from shrimps it is nutritous. belacan has quality, bad quality give unexpected results, go for reddish and clean texture. Malacca is famous for belacan production especially in kelebang area.

Belacan powder for koi... hmmm... sounds like you are trying to serve your koi on a dish Laugh

Kidding aside, I suppose if it's pure shrimp paste it should be fine. Don't think chilli and koi goes well together Wink
