Dear koi714

A good diet is essentual. But also is a varied deit. High quality foods cost, depending on the time of year on the protein levels.

If you can dig earth worms you can feed them. Try a slice of granery brown bread once or twice a week. Lettuce is also good once a week, prawns cockles ect are good treat foods but only once a week.

If you use live foods like daphnia blood worm ect. make sure they come from a safe source or breed your own. Frozen foods are also a good treat and safe.

Some dry foods you can add stuff to, to increace the vitamin content like koi vits, and Propolis.

If you buy foods with antibiotics in them don't feed for more than 10 days at a time, and leave more than 3 months gap.

But for optomum growth you need a bigger pond.

Dear koi714

No i don't know the best. But i wouldn't just go for one brand name. Try tetra floating stick and mix them with nishigoi pellets. Thing is if they get used to one type of food they might not try other foods as they are intelignt animals and are very coutous about new things.

Your aiming for complete balance diet with minimum waiste. Anything with alot of carbs will make them poo. and fish foods don't often tell you about the carbs.

Everyone has their own idea of whats best. I spose you just have to try and see for yourself.

I agree with u. Is like if a baby eating. If you feed them sweets, they wont eat anything else rather than sweets. I been feeding my big kois Hikari pellet and they wont eat nothing else, last week i bought koi flake and they wont eat it. But when i fed my little 3' inches koi the flakes, and they love it.

Dear koiguyoz

What about the high carb diet? yeah. We humans try all these diets and fads and most of the time it dosent do seem to do us any good, unless of course we are stupid with our diets in the first place.

So lets not be stupid with our fish diets OK?

If your looking for a good quality koi pellet then check the analysis on the packets. You want to look for one which has a low ash content- ash is not used by the koi and goes straight into the water once excreted- so the lower the better- i have found that nishikoi pellets offer low ash levels aswell as being fairly good value compared to other makes. Also depending on the climate where you live will depend on the type of food. For example dont feed your koi high protein foods if the temperature isnt high. Here in the UK I use wheatgerm during the spring and autumn and use higher protein food in the summer when koi's digestion is the quickest.
As the other members have said above- try some of the suggested treats but not too often- find something that your kois like. This should ensure a varied good diet like Zoul said

High Carb dietsTongue
For me, the main emphasis is on balance. Protein in the 35-40% range, plenty of fish meal, krill, spirulina, vegetables of most types, reasonable quantities of wheat, soy, and rice, no corn products (not digestible by Koi), and low carb and ash content. Low protein feed is generally loaded with carbs to balance out the equation. Too many carbs lead to pot bellied Koi with fatty liver disease and other health problems, even in cool water. Fresh fruits, veggies, worms, etc... for treats are also good for health and variety in diet.
