Earlier in some post, I forgot but some one said catfish had a diffrent digestive system so don't feed the same thing you do to kois because it is bad for their intestines. But I think it should ok because they have the same taste but I'm really not sure, the reasons why people usally feed pellets and sticks is because it does less palluting the water then any other natural koi food like oranges and all that. It's funny when people tell you not to feed thease not to feed those but you keep on doing it your kois never get sick like they say.

Hi eastside the reason i ask was we have a catfish pond and we feed them of course catfishfood but we also have the common carp in the ponds and they grow like wild. The other reason I ask was it is cheaper and wont to grow larger numbers of koi later on. Crazy If they do ok on this food shouldnt the coloered carp? You can bring out their color later on in life if you feed color inhancing food right? This has stumped me because of the common koi growing and doing well in a natural pond.

Re: [koifishgirl] cat fish food [In reply to] Can't Post

hi

My pond lady told me the reason to avoid using catfish food for koi is that it will build up fat tissue that causes problems and can damage their liver. Fish is the main ingredient in koi food. Catfish food is primarily based on corn or wheat. Other things are mixed in but its mainly corn or wheat. Your koi will enjoy it and grow fast using it if you are willing to risk their health by feeding it. When I first got started in this hobby I used it and grew my koi fast. It was so cheap I would feed them all they could eat 3 times a day at least. Since I have quit using it my feed bill has jumped way up and my koi don't grow quite as fast. I use color enhancing pellets and a lot of vegetables and the color of my koi improved a lot.

I am sure the experts would say its a bad idea but I could see where using it with small koi would work. The first year I would think the protein would just go to build muscle mass not fat anyway. The color enhancing food can cause liver damage to young koi anyway.

Catfish food is designed to put weight on a catfish not beautiful colored carp. Using it for Koi is risking your mature koi's health. Is the risk worth what you would save on your feed bill ?
