catfish food Can't Post

Hi all I just visted a koi farm where the man was feeding catfish food to his koi. Not to long ago I went to a mans house and he was feeding catfish food and his goldfish had developed Dropsy from feeding the catfish food and their bellies were blown up like a ballon I had been feeding my koi a little catfish food and was told when I went to the Atlanta Koi Show this past Semptember not to feed catfish food as this would hurt my koi and destroy the kidneys. I dont know how long it takes for the damage to be done by catfish food, but this guy has been feeding for a couple of years and his koi look Ok. Has anyone got any info on catfish food and what it does to koi? And what is in the contents of catfish food that hurt koi and not catfishCrazy Also is there a type of catfish food that is ok to feed to koi?

I would not feed catfish food to koi. Everywhere that I have read discourage this. As a koi lover, we all put in so much in the hobby, spending $$$ for the best filtration, best liner, best quality koi etc. Why skimp on the food that would increase chances of getting them sick?

eastside,

you also wont get sick right away when u smoke. when u drink a bottle of alcoholic bev a day. etc. etc.

anyway, THEY SAY feeding this and that shortens their life... and wont kill them/make them sick instantly

I understand what you are saying but humans are humans smoking is smoking that has nothing to do with catfish food and kois. In the wild koi have been eating everything even their own waste, bugs, flies, even grass that can get them sick and they still get bigger and healthier than ours which eats pellets every day.

Re: [eastside] catfish food [In reply to] Can't Post

what they eat in the wild is actually 10 times healthier than the koi pellets we feed them.

you see, the catfish food's MAIN purpose is to grow and fatten the catfish as fast as fishly possible,
they dont care how long the catfish lives, because they get eaten by humans even before we find out that they have some sort of organ disease.

catfish food contains a lot of things not good for fish ... like ... hmm ... fat?

Good point! I think I will go by this guys house and take some pics and post for everyone to see what I am talking about. You wont believe what you see. It is just plain hard to see the goldfish in this shape and he said some of them are dieing off so I am sure if he knew what catfish food done to them he would have not feed. You put a lot of time into the fish and you dont want your pets unhealthy so if I can make anything clear this is one subject that needs talked about. After I get some pics of the fish everyone can make a choice for themselfs what to feed and what not to feed. I just think this will be and eye opener for all to see as to what catfishfood does the the kidneys of fish.

I'm no expert but what I've read is to stay away from foods that list "corn" as one of the main ingredients. I would guess that catfish food is made mostly from corn. Is it true that any corn ingredients are bad for koi?

Re: [Fishbone] catfish food [In reply to] Can't Post

I have been told different things from different breeder and I still think it would be best to stay away from catfish food. Yes it is true that the corn meal is not good for them, why I dont know but look at the % of protein in the catfish food and see what it is and see what % of veggies are in the food. Compare it with a good brand of koi food and see what the difference is. If the food is close I dont see why you cant use this to feed as long as it is close. Be carefull with this as I have had a chance to see goldfish that are being feed catfish food and they all have become bloated and look to have developed kidney failure. That is why I plan on sticking to a good koi food. I have put to much money into my koi and their health to take a chance.
