daphnia Can't Post

are daphnia common water fleas.? i have water fleas living in my water lily pots and in my water fall. they look to big to feed to small fry, but i read some where that water fleas were daphnia. my big fish love them. if i put some in with my fry will they live and multiply
, or do you have to have dirt. my fry are in my pond with a seperation between them and my other fish . also if fry stay on the top of the water,or not far down, could you safely put a pump in the bottom to pump out the water without sucking out the fry, water is about 2 foot. otherwise how do you change the water??? betty

Hello , first of all, Daphnia magna is also called water flea, my question for you is, do you know what Daphnia look like? Daphnia only grows to so big, and the LITTLE ones are so small that koi fry can easily eat them. So dont worry, also Daphnia only eat things smaller than them selves! You mention changing water, what type of filtration do you have in your pond! send more info for more help. And yes a pump will suck up fry! That is what pumps do!

i really dont know about the daphnia, but someone told me the little critters i have in my pond was water fleas, maybe they are,nt. the ones i see are to big for fry to eat,im talking 2 week old fry.i have run out of brime shrimp, and am now feeding ground adult food. the pond i have my fry in is about 1000 gal.,and is seperated in the middle with some matting i dont get good flow thru this. the flow thru is not deep so i can,t take the water down very much from the other side. never had any problems with my filtering.have tt kind of filter with lava rock for bio. i read that fry can not go deep because their gills are not developed yet. so was thinking they would not be on the bottom. what do you think? was wanting to take water down for a better water change. i can only add to it after evaporation, any ideas? thanks betty. ps the water fleas that i can see are about twice the size of a knat, that is if they are water fleas. what else could they be?

Betty,

RE: Water reduction

Have you considered using a low flow water pump such as a submersible powerhead with a sponge filter attachment on the input side to pump water out from the fry pond?

Regards,
Ben

hi, the only pump i have is about 300 gal an hour, what if i wrap the pump with something like panty hose, do you think they would get stuck to it and injure them? have you ever tried this? dont have a sponge filter either. did pump out the pond before i put the eggs in it. but still would like to take it down about a third , and put fresh water in. i read a lot of your stuff on the forum. let me ask you, i had fry last year, wound up with about 125 all good no deformemties.but some of them are still only about 1and a half inches, and up. in your opinion will they ever get big,? i dont mean real big but bigger,or should they have been culled out.? this years fry are 18 days old,and it seems they are slow growing, maybe i am rushing them. i am seeing color, spots like black, they are so little. thanks for the reply betty

I have never tried a pantyhose on a pump, so I'm not really sure it would work.

I think the best way to see how much suction you'll get (if you intend to head down the pantyhose path) is to put a piece of paper close enough to the panty hose cover and see how much it can suck. Too much suction could be a problem :(. What I was basically thinking is that if you can increase the surface area of suction, the force of the suction would be less than what it would be if the surface area was small (since a small suction area would have a higher input velocity).

I do believe if the fry do get sucked into the panty hose, there is a good chance of injuries because of their fragile bodies.

I believe the other safest way belongs to the siphon method of water removal. Wrapping a garden hose or hose of less than 20mm in diameter on the input with a piece of wadding, or even panty hose might be a safer method as the flow would more likely be very slow. Using a 4mm airline hose (as I do for siphoning poo from my fry tanks) is an even slower but even safer method (also using wadding or other strainer).

As for the one and a half inch fry, I believe you should give them more time. Maybe its not there time to go into a growth spurt just yet (like kids approaching their teens hehe...sometimes you worry they might be a tad small).
