Sure Henry, but remove the bones and any sharp appendages before you throw it into the pond. Make sure the fish is fresh as chances of infection is high with raw food. However your water will get pretty messy if you feed raw food frequently. Smile

Hi dttk

is it good for the koi? anyway i planned to give fresh fish once a week as a substitute if i dont find any earthworm. How about meat from shells and snails? what type of snails are ok? theres a lot of snails in our backyard for it is already rainy season in our place.

Henry, raw food is nutritious for koi but precautions mentioned have to be taken. I've not tried giving snails and shellfish but I would prefer to feed them what we would normally eat. Smile

hey dttk

i have read this article and thats why im confused what type of snails they eat in the wild.
Where does the color come from?
Koi cannot synthesize their own color pigment therefore they have to consume it. In wild conditions the color pigments would originate from eating algae, shrimps, snails etc, In the confines of a Koi pond there is insufficient of these different organisms to satisfy the Koi's requirements, therefore it is important to feed color-enhancing foods. As with all Koi feeds, it is important that the color enhancing food given is of high quality to ensure that the pigments are in a form that the fish can absorb into its body.

my friend is feeding this (snails and meat from shells) and his koi is still ok but i would like to confirm this with the more experience koi keeper.

thanks henry

Henry, you're right abt wild carps which are mostly greyish or brownish. The koi we keep in the pond are coloured carps. Their colours are predetermined in their genes. By not feeding colour enhancers these koi will also develope colours. However abit of good quality colour enhancer will help to make the colours even more vibrant. Over feeding of colour enhancers to young koi may damage their liver. Smile

he should put japanese trap door snails, or the really small kind. those are the only ones koi can eat, its not like they can eat garden snails. yes i feed my koi a mix of color enhancers and growth enhancers, the koi look excellent.

I know of a koi backyard breeder who feeds his young koi with boiled/chopped chicken intestines...he said they really grow big with the food.

A friend of mine also feeds his koi boiled pork kidney...I witness that they REAAALLLYY grow big in just 2-3 months

Pepci

i also heard about that kind of food. maybe the breeders name is harold or maybe pintel, but lets hear dr tan's comment regarding on that kind of food.

another question for dr tan

is it ok to feed daphnia to a larger koi ranging from 12 - 22 inches

thanks

Pepci/Henry, boiled or cooked food is ok. Just don't overfeed as undigested food will be passed out which messes up the water. Undigested food especially those containing high protein and fat decomposes in water leading to increase in the number of bad bacteria that causes ulcers and mouth rot. Like humans, high fat diet is also not healthy for koi. Daphnia is more suitable for frys but sure they can be given to larger koi too. Smile

Dr Tan

Isnt it risky if the daphnia get into the gills of larger koi? And ive heard that this will cause death to the fish.

Henry, I really don't have any idea about that! Is it possible Unimpressed? I mean Koi does consume microscopic phytoplankton that causes green water but it's not a problem with them. Maybe some input from other members may help. Smile
