feeding koi in the winter Can't Post

I live in the Pacific Northwest ( Seattle, WA area). I have 4 healthy 7 inch Koi in my concrete pond.. The temperatures are beginning to drop to below 40 degrees at night. I normally (during the spring, summer and fall) feed them once a day. I am wondering how to feed the fish during the winter months.. I am currently feeding them a spring/autumn type food. Do I need a special food? and how often?

Hi leanne,

Here is my 2cents opinoinWink If your pond temp during the day stays above 60deg F you can still feed them a few pellets once a day, if the temp drop below 55deg F (during the day) I would stop feeding. Koi will survive without food for months as they're not as active during warmer weather. I'm from Sydney and when winter come I stop feeding for 3 months and been doing it for the last 4 to 5yrs now with no probs on koiSmile This is only my opinoin and if feel uncomfortable with it pls do not follow my advice. Some one on your part of the world may think otherwise.

rgds,
Jon

Yep Jon is right, he did not tell you wrong. We have some good koi keepers on this forum and Jon is one of them. I also dont feed my koi through the winter months. As soon as my koi stop eating the food aggressive I stop feeding, most of the time it is when the temps drop below 50 degs.

And as far as your part of the world goes, it does not matter, when the water temps drop the koi wont eat anyways so stop feeding. Wink

Frown I live in PA. the past couple of days have been in the 60s however, for two - three weeks before the nights were down in the forties and days were 40's-50's. The pond's water temp was 45 in the day time I stopped feeding my fish, but my sweet mother in law dropped some food in the other day because she hadn't seen them in a while and they did not eat it. So.. I did not know that the koi would just stop eatting, I had always been warned about their eatting if they were fed. I'd always made it a point to stop feeding them. I still will, and mother in law is wiser now.
Winters here are about 5-6 months long. My koi of the old pond and this pond have survived these long winters. They get hungry fast though and I love the first feeding!!!

Good luck with your koi through the winter! I just said today, "my koi have gotta be smart and survivors, I just can't protect them from everything if they stay out side." I miss feeding mine already.

Once I tried too hard to control things in the pond....the frogs left.
