Sit by the pond and slowly toss in little bits of food...spend 10-15 minutes everday doing that.
They'll figure out you are the source of their supper.

You can try to hold the food in ur hands and dip ut in the water until they sense the food and come closer to your hands. Then you can slowly release the food and continue doing it until they get use to it and later they will eventually eat from your hands Wink

how I made my koi braver [In reply to] Can't Post

I have had koi for a little over a week and they are super scared of anything. Once they see me or something they just shoot over to a pot and hide behind it. Someone told me they like swimming in a shoal because that gives them protection. So maybe you should invest in a few more koi. I added a few more (without overcrowding my little pond) and I can tell they are braver.

I also added a few more pots of plants so that they could swim around the pond but still be close to something to hide behind. I added floating water hyacinth and they seem to find comfort under them.

Also, they need to get used to your presence, so spend some time with them every day. I just discovered how to feed “THE BIG BABIES” as you call them. Just soak the floating pellets and then squeeze out the air so they sink. Then let one sink right in front of a koi. They won’t pass that up! Once they associate your hand and your motions with food they’ll get tamer (I hope).

I have the same problem with my kois before. After I put them in a bigger and deeper (4 1/2') pond they became bolder and in a week they hand feed.

Hi Eric,
Just recently I was able to also see my koi eat pellets out of my hand, they are tamer now because I spent more time feeding them. Now, I just put my hand in the water, wait for them to nibble my fingertips and sometimes my palm, and then I drop the pellets in. The small ones I have been raising for three weeks do this first, and the others follow.
