Hello, I have written to you, Why not try to get some nice gold fish, they like flakes! And I think they would do fine in your space!

I give my Koi flakes for now, due to a problem they had with Koi food I purchased from a pet store. They are also getting tuflix worms.
That's why I posted on this forum to get advice on what food IS best for my Koi's, where the best place to go for it, what mixture is best for them to promote healthy scales, keep their colors true and so on. They dislike pellets, and the long stick food for ponds. The pet stores here are very limited on food for Koi and they even stop selling food for them during the winter which leaves me at wits end.

Don't need a gold fish. Baby sitting a gold fish right now for a friend, .
I prefer Koi and butterfly Koi

Where do you live? Depending on the kois size, you can give them pieces of wheat bread, green peas ,lemon or orange slices , lettuce, try some of these things, they may not like all of these things, also I am a big fan of Butterfly koi!!! I have many and I think they are much prettier than other koi!

Re: [ayranjim] food for koi [In reply to] Can't Post

I live in Horseheads, NY. Houdini ( butterfly Koi )and Flash ( regular Koi, not butterfly. He has a BIG appetite_ are both 16 inches ( though Flash is three years younger than houdini) , Little Critter ( butterfly, ) is 12 inches and the smallest, Hermime is 8 inches.
How big should the pieces of food be? I don't want to cause them to choke or anything. Should I introduce the new food slowly? Are there any dangers I should watch for when trying to feed them new food stuff? Is the a proper diet they need to be on to insure good nutrion?
I love Koi's that have unusual and color pattern. I didn't realize there was so many different colors / patterns there is out there.
I found that Butterfly Koi's are not as aggressive eaters as the Regular Koi.
Flash ( my white Koi)will come up to the top of the tank and take food from my fingers, they all do, but Flash with his appetite will swallow four tuflix worms cubes at once!

Would love to get more butterfly koi and Regular koi, but i need to learn more about them and their needs before I get any more.

Butterfly koi are very graceful and they are my favorite too. They are less likley to jump out of the tank then Regular Koi. But as a precaution i have a lid on to prevent any jumping.

I've seen more variety of color in Regular Koi then i have with Butterfly Koi. There's some colors I've seen that I would LOVE to see on a Butterfly.

Hello, well, your koi are big enough to eat almost everything I mentioned! I would stay around when you feed them , just to see how they act! And just start one day to give them something different! I feed mine in the morning and afternoon and night, but I would try new food in the morning when they are most hungry! They wont be as picky!
Butterfly are my favorites too! They are just so pretty, and mine too come and eat out of my hands in the morning!!
I was born in souther California, but I moved to Santiago Chile about 13 years ago! I have a big butterfly koi I named ANGEL, he is like a angel when he swim with his fins flowing in the water!

So far they don't like anything I've tried, except the Tuflix worm. It's so good to see their appitie improve.
A word of warning to everyone- never buy koi food that is on clearence. Never.

What other food, besides worms, will Koi eat?

You dont' need to worry about them choking. Koi have TEETH. You can't see them because they are down in their throat, but an adult Koi has teeth about the same size as a human child's molars.

Re: [lecia] food for koi [In reply to] Can't Post

You mentioned earlier about wanting to find more colorful longfins, and your problem is fairly common.
Because they were rejected by Japanese breeders from true "Koi" status, very few of them have put any effort into breeding for quality and variety, which leaves mostly low grade breeders will lower quality fish to fill the longfin marketplace. A few have done a decent job of it, but it takes time.
Some of the better looking ones I've seen are Longfin Doitsu varieties like Shusui and Beni Kikokuryu. Good looking Longfin Gosanke are hard to find as they tend to have messy patterns and poor quality color.

I agree with it being hard to find the long fins, ( butterfly Koi). most pets stores do sell them, but their health isn't good at all. Most come up from florida.

I'm not sure of any Breeders near me who even sell butterFly koi's.

I do hope to be able to post a picture of my koi's as soon as i can get a print shop program.

Is there a way to ID the different Koi's you mentioned?

One of my favorite websites for Koi Identification...
http://www.koiid.com/cd/pg2.htm
There are no longfins on the page, but the markings you would look for are the same IF you can find a decent one in longfin breeding. You might consider asking around at this forum.
http://www.koiphen.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=2
There are a number of members there who are in your area who may be able to direct you to a better source than what you've found. Several breeders are members/advertisers there, and some of them breed some decent longfins as well.

I have been buying my Koi food from discountkoifood.com

I work for a utility company and see quite a few fish ponds on my route, and I got to talking to someone one day about how they can afford to feed all of their fish, and they turned me on to that site.

They have the lowest prices I have ever seen, ship fast, and my koi and gold fish love their food. I go through about twenty-five pounds every 2 weeks. It sure beats the high priced stuff I had been buying from pet stores.

Hope that helps.

Here is a seller on Ebay selling freeze dried silkworms. They are high protein and really bring out their color and the fish love them.
