it takes months to start to hand feed. just feed them normally each day but slowly move closer each day and spend alot of time with your koi next to the pond, and slowly they will start to trust you, but everyones koi are different.

Hi Martin,

I don't have any tips as far as hand feeding goes, but I was wondering what type of koi that is in the picture in your signature. I just got a koi the other day that looks exactly like that only instead of orange, he's yellow. Any info would be super! Thanks.

Hi martin

Yes the keyword is patience. You must sit by your pond at one particular spot everytime and throw in a few pellets as close as possible to you. Put your hand in the water near the pellets. It may take one or two hours even before one of them swims around the pellets. Again, patience is the word. If still no koi is eating the pellet after that, take the pellets out. Continue doing this at each feeding time if possible at the same time of the day. They will get use to you and your hand in the water. Eventually it will take the pellets right of your hands out of hunger. In the process they will slowly accept you as a fish-friendly beingCool.

Remember any stress to the fish however caused will easily jeopardise this "close relationship". You may have to start all over again. It is important not to loose the trust.

good luck.

I start hand feeding when they were 4" after I got them a couple of months to adapt the pond

First feed them twice weekly, then within a month they will start following you cus they are starving.

Stick your hand in the water and if they come up they will suck or nibble on your fingers

If they dont come up, put some food in the hand... put your hand under water and let one pellet come out

Soon they will catch up and be like, "yes fooooooood" and come towards your hand

Then you put food in your hands and they will eat out of your hand

Didnt take me that long to do it. They gotta trust you before you try anything.

Another reason why your koi arent hand feeding may beacause theyre is a predator at night constantly harassing them. try building a rock cave big enough to house your koi. this will help them feel more confident.

Martin99

Most of my kois can be hand fed. However, mine is not achieved thru training but one of luck. A friend gave me a 50cm "commando utsuri" (meant to be the guinea pig for testing my new pond water). It has a slight bulging stomach on one side and has only one working eye...I think. It survived my new pond and has been with me for a year now. It is absolutely tame and the rest of my kois follow its feed-from-hand routine. It is my "karma koi" coz evidently it is the leader which tames the rest and make them more human friendly. Also, my daughter has taken a great liking to it and will disown me if I gave it away.

Guess this would be the easiest method to own hand-fed kois. Heard that dark colored kois (usually chagois) become natural leaders in a pond and easier to train to accept food from hand. Just something I heard from the grapevine. Anyone care to confirm that? I do not own a chagoi.

Hi everyone,

This is my first post and seems that this is one of the area I have a little knowledge of.

Yes Martin99, you are right! Chagoi is a real good example for others to follow! We didnt intend to get chagoi initially but after being told that it will be one of the good example for the others kois to follow, hence we just get him!! As we really want to have the hand feeding experience after visiting one of the koi farm in Sydney where ALL of their kois are hand feeded. Their kois are really friendly as they do come over to anyone that holds food in the hand. Not too sure they were hungry or....but still they come over when food is around!

And it work out right. Now each and every of my kois are hand feed.

Hope it helps.

i guess it will work if u put 1 tame koi with the rest of the geng..and the hand feeding would be easier just like glutinous said. I will try and find a tame koi for sale and see how it goes.Coz my kois area always afraid, have them for 6 month now..no hand feeding.or maybe they are afraid of predator and assume that i am 1.currently there's this blue bird with long beak which harras my ponds..dunno how to catch it yet,but if i do catch it.....

Martin,
it is not difficult to hand feed your koi.
Patient is word to hand feed as the team sais.

What I did was
1. First week - swirling the water with hand for a few minutes to catch attention of koi, then put some food on the water. Try to do it at least twice a day
2. Second week - put some food on your hand and have your palm face down while the fish food is at your palm. wait patiently for the fish to come over and some of them will eat it. Don't be scare when you can feel them eating the food from your palm. This will take about 20 minutes each time.
3. Third week - put the fish food at finger tips and you can do it with palm up or down depending on your likes. wait the same way as on the third week but this times only feed those that come over and eat and leave the rest hungry.
The following days most of the koi will come over and feed on your fingers.

Patient and hunger will make koi come to you

Try it, it works on mine.
