25cm to 50cm is indeed extraordinary growth.

anyway, here's a breakdown of what they say they do ...

1) extra good filtration and aeration (e.g. bakki showers)
2) high quality food, high protein
3) good water quality because of number 1 and lots of space

personally, i do the following

feed at least 5 or 6 times a day.
lots of aeration
make sure your filter can cope with the heavy feeding
regular water change (everyday or every other day for me)
good quality food that has high protein thats easily digestible

Hi,

It is not difficult to get good growth rates in a tropical climate like Malaysia. The kois' metabolic rate is high and they digest high protein food easily. Given the factors mentioned by Mike above, I have to add one more:

Genes.

You will not have fast growing young kois if the parent kois are small. The Momotaros you've read in the growing competition have parent stocks averaging >80cm to >90cm. Yao Ming won't be 7'6" if his mom and dad is 5'6" Wink.

As for choice of food for fast growth, mine's below:

1. Kusuri Super Growth
2. Hikari Hi-Growth
3. Saki Hikari Growth

Rgds,
Dennis
