how to feed the kois equally Can't Post

i have 40 kois in my pond. some kois just don't grow much, i noticed that they are to shy to come up. unlike the others who stay at water level slowly eating the food, they always are in a hurry to grab their food and go down at once. although, it is very evident that they really want to eat. they usually miss the food because of hurrying to go down. they always end up just pushing the food away. how can i train them to be like the others?

Hi vv,

Whan you feed your koi step back and watch them from a distance. Then get closer after a few days of feeding see how they will reactSmile Do this until they get used to you. Patince is all you needTongueSmile

hi jon,
actually my problem is some kois just get to eat a lot and some of my favorites are left with nothing because theyre so afraid. in fact, i have many kois feeding in my hand, the problem is only they are the only ones growing (and kinda fat), while the shy ones remain small and skinny. i don't know how i can balance them.

i tried for one month by feeding far away from them, but its still the same, the fat ones are always there to finish everything. even if i scatter it, theyre the ones to finish most of it. it seems that they are the expert in eating while the others just can't seem to get the food in their mouth accurately (bcause theyre always in a hurry).

do you think isolating them will help?

Hi vv,

Isolating them might help but you will still have to have proper filtration. Have you tried to starve them??? Koi can survive without food for weeksSmile

I have this problem in my aquarium (I purchased a couple small Koi for my pond next spring). One of my black Koi is very bold (and hungry!) and eats up all of the food as I put it in. My other two Koi are much more timid and I don't think they get much of anything to eat. Its only a 55 gallon tank, I'm starting to worry about the amount of food I'm feeding this little guy...he is definately starting to look fat (and has grown a fair bit compared to the other two). I'm trying to 'sneak' food to the others by distracting Mr. Piglet at one side of the tank with a treat or two.

You might try feeding a mix of floating and sinking food. Koi absolutely go nuts for small bits of shrimp and fresh orange, both of which sink. Drop in the floating food for the piggy and put in the sinkers for the shy type. It will turn them into much more aggressive eaters and they will love you for itCool.
