koi food alternative Can't Post

when i moved my koi from the small pond to the bigger pond. ive fed them more in a week than i did the past few months they were in the small pond.

suddenly, my hikari is running out. ive alternated with this dried tiny shrimp thingy (which i dont know what its called in english) but the only down side to this shrimp thingy is that its not as clean as pellets.

Hi Mike

Glad to hear they are eatting so much. The larger pond will give them more area to swim and exercise in so they will eat more and grow faster. My fish really grew when I moved them from a 2000 gallon pond where they were crowded to a 6000 gallon one. They are eatting lots more and growing much faster. They are happier I think also Tongue. I do give them a lot of vegtables in the summer. The fresh vegtables are real cheap this time of year and the koi love them !!!

Good luck
Keith

Those shrimp looks Tasty!! Aragorn, Your're from the Philippines right. I'm too but moved here in the US since 1975.

Over here they call that shrimp Krill. But alot of orientals use that for cooking. If you eat chinese food you have eaten this shrimp.

Thanks for posting this picture. I have always wondered about these shrimp. I cost less than your everyday Koi food. Sometimes more than half. Try doing the math, some koi food cost over $10 per pound. A good T Bone steak cost less than this. You can go to an oriental store and buy these Shrimps for around $5 per pound. And I can guarantee that the protein content of this shrimp is higher than any koi food out in the market. Of course you need to supplement the other nutrients.

One other thing, I also feed my Koi squid. I cut them up into small bits. You should see how happy these fish when they eat the squid.

thanks
BongP

Hi Henry

My fish really seem to like watermellon which works out great. I sit on the edge of the pond eatting some, and tossing small pieces in to my fish. They quickly suck it up. Last summer they would eat it out of my hand. They also like tomatoes and fresh peas. A friend of mine feeds her fish squash and cucumbers. I don't eat those much so haven't tried it on my fish. My fish also love oranges and grapes. They really love Northern beans from Bush. I don't think stuff from a can like that is as good for my fish but its quick and easy when fresh isn't available.

The best thing to to is try different vegetables and fruits you like. When you first add a new food to the pond they will likely be shy about eatting it. Just give them a small amount and watch them. Most of it they really like but somethings they just don't like. My fish don't like strawberries, canalope, or apricots. I just don't feed them things that have a hard core that would be difficult to digest.

Hope your koi get lots of new treats

Keith

Hi texasproud34,
what types of fresh vegetables can koi eat? My wife's garden has tomatos, corn, carrot, and eggplant so I was wondering what was safe for them, as well as how to feed it to them (cooked, raw/fresh but washed)

Hi Blue

You are a lucky man to have a wife that likes to garden. I think your fish will enjoy the vegetables she is growing but I wouldn't want to feed my fish anything as hard as a raw carrott. If its a vegetable and soft, try it. I put a small amount of new stuff in the shallow end of my pond. If the fish aren't interested in it after 30 minutes I take it out. When you first give them new stuff the are usually shy about trying it but after a few minutes they will nibble on it and you can tell if the like it. Mine really like watermellon. I will have some ice cold, eat part of it and toss them small pieces as I sit on the edge of the pond. Its a great way to cool of in the afternoon !!!!

Is your wife raising any squash or peas ? beans ? Mine like those and really like tomatoes. Expreiment and let us know what happens.
